Derek Edmund Goodhand, born December 1929 in Karachi, a British principality at the time of his birth, resting peacefully at Hospice Georgian Triangle (Campbell House) passed away at the age of 92 on May 23, 2022.
Derek is survived by his children Jane Smith, Michael Goodhand (Sandra Gosselin), his nephew Chris Goodhand (Carin), and his two grandchildren Alexei and Chloe Goodhand.
Derek at the young age of 5 travelled with his older brother, Ian, to Truro boarding school in Cornwall UK and spent summers with his grandparents who resided nearby. When he graduated from Truro he attended Sandhurst Military Academy then was commissioned with the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. He served a few years in the military but felt that his assignment to headquarters was too restrictive so he resigned his commission and travelled to Canada. When he arrived he began his 45 year career in the investment business working for Equitable Securities Ltd. which was eventually purchased by the National Bank.
At the beginning of his career while living in Toronto he met Suzette Keefler and they married October 1956. Derek and Suzette lived in Hamilton until their son Michael was born. They then moved to Montreal and resided several years in Beaconsfield during which time they welcomed their daughter Jane Smith to their family. When his business head office was relocated the family moved from Montreal to Toronto where they lived until he retired.
Most cherished memories are of family gatherings celebrated by indulging in great food and company. When Derek retired he and Suzette moved to the Town of The Blue Mountains where they both enjoyed hiking the Bruce Trail and cross country skiing. Also, they enjoyed many vacations touring the world, experiencing different cultures, and climbing every mountain they could find!
A service and scattering of his ashes will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, 166 Russell St E, Clarksburg, ON N0H 1J0 on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 1:00 pm.
