Gilray, Barry Alexander
Barry Gilray of Meaford passed away peacefully with his wife by his side at Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound on Monday, December 14th, 2020 at the age of 77.

Barry was born on September 1st, 1943 in Flesherton, Ontario. He was a son of the late Alexander and Irene Gilray.
Barry was the much loved husband of Margaret Gilray (nee Breadner). He was the proud father of Cindy and her husband Jason Proulx and grandfather of Erica and her husband Mike Tudisco, and Andrew Poirier.
He was the dear brother of Elizabeth Curtis of Georgetown Delaware, USA, Celia and her husband Barry Auchenbach of Lewis Delaware, USA, Lee and his wife Anita of Annan and will be remembered fondly by their families and by the Breadner family.
Barry started with Clarksburg Hardware as a well driller. He worked at several jobs including Ormsby Concrete. In 1965 he started working for the Town of Meaford as the Road Superintendent; he later became the manager of the Public Works Department for the Municipality of Meaford and held this position for 40 years until his retirement in 2005. After his retirement, Barry continued to work with his good friend Laverne at Rogers Enterprises and also worked part–time at Ferguson Funeral Home. He was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church, a volunteer Fireman, a life time member of the Kinsmen family, and also a member of the ‘Association of Ontario Road Supervisors’. He was a very proud supporter of the AA Program and has overcome many challenges in his lifetime. Barry was always there to offer guidance, support, a friendly smile and even a story or joke. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends, and his kindness will never be forgotten.
A public visitation will take place at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Thursday, December 17, 2020 between 9 am – 1 pm. Please call the funeral home at 519-538-1320 on Tuesday or Wednesday between 9:30am and 1:30pm to schedule a time if you would like to attend the public visitation. Friends are welcome to remain in their vehicles and safely park along the side of Denmark or Aiken Street on Thursday at 2 o’clock to honour Barry as we process to Lakeview Cemetery in the horse drawn hearse that Barry made a special request for many years ago. A private service of committal and interment will take place at the cemetery. We appreciate your patience and assistance as we follow the Covid 19 rules and restrictions to keep everyone safe.
As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Residential Hospice Grey Bruce ‘Chapman House’ would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted. www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Our condolences Marg, Cindy and family in the passing of Barry. Barry was such a well known, personable and beloved person for his involvement in so many areas of Meaford and beyond. In the past few years, I had several opportunities to work along side of Barry at Ferguson Funeral Home. I always enjoyed chatting with Barry, while we worked. We never lacked in having a good conversation of something to make us both smile . Somehow, I feel like I knew Barry, better than I actually do, thanks to great fun stories I heard from others. May the comfort of the wonderful memories always be with you as we keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Rick and Verna Hindle

What a loss to his family, Meaford, and the community members he supported. Kind in all our interactions, Barry maintained a good sense of humour and was able to laugh at himself. He will be greatly missed. I am only seeing this now. Best wishes and love to his family at a time of such a loss. His gratitude to and empathy for his family members, especially his wife, was evident in his words.
