Christensen, Birthe

Birthe Christensen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on January 4, 1931 and died peacefully in Thornbury, Ontario on April 16, 2021 at the age of 90.

Birthe came to Canada in 1957 with her husband Gunnar and her son William to start their life in Canada. She was the beloved wife of the late Gunnar Christensen and mother to William (Karen), Gunnar (Elaine), Thomas (Vanessa), and grandmother to Grace, Martin, Emily, Jack and Emma who were the pride and joy of her life. Later, with her partner Kaj Jensen, his daughter Liane and son Kris, she was a caring step grandmother to Braden, Simone and Griffin.

Birthe, who was better known as Mrs. C in the community, will be remembered as a loving and caring individual with deep kindness that was sometimes overlooked by her strong opinions and thoughts on life. The legacy of Birthe’s spirit, zest for life and love of all things in the kitchen and in the garden will live on through them. Birthe was an amazing cook hosting many parties and Danish smorgasbords. She experienced great joy with her garden with its huge flowerbeds and all kinds of bushes and trees around the house. She was a talented seamstress, crocheter and knitter and made many kinds of sweaters for family and friends. She loved doing needlepoint the most. Gunnar and Birthe started the Little Mermaid Health Club in Clarksburg in 1977.  She ran this for about 10 years where adults were rejuvenated and many children learned how to swim. While she loved her home, she also travelled a number of times back to Denmark to visit relatives as well as numerous times to the Caribbean. She will truly be missed.

A celebration of Birthe’s life will be held at a later date when it is safe for family and friends to gather. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family on the funeral home website below.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude to all employees at Errinrung Nursing Home who helped with Birthe’s care. As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

I have many memories of working at The Little Mermaid. Hundreds of children learned to swim in a warm and caring environment. Birthe also taught me to make Liverwurst pate and Strudel. She was a strong vibrant woman who adored her boys.
    Cherish your memories
