Whitney, David Franklin

David Franklin Whitney passed away at the Meaford Hospital on Monday, July 11, 2022.

Beloved husband of Fay (nee Blackburn) who he married on August 8, 1964.

He is survived by his brother, Jim and sister-in-law Linda (Dunkin) of Oakville and by his sister Ruth and brother-in-law Bill Long of Atwood.

David was born on November 25, 1938 at the Whitney farm in Brunner, Ontario, a son of  the late Wesley Matthew Whitney and Jean (Curtis) Whitney.

Dave is remembered fondly by his nephews and nieces. They all remember his many stories and jokes where he kept everyone entertained at family gatherings and many social events. As one of them said, “I loved uncle Dave – he always made me laugh.”  You have to love someone who makes you laugh.

Dave was a member of Meaford United Church and was actively involved in the maintenance of a section of the Bruce Trail for many years. He also learned to play the banjo and with Fay and friends they were very entertaining with Dave as the singer.

He was very active during his retirement, walking on the trails, biking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing – long journeys that most people half his age would have found difficult.  Fay was with him, often leading the way.

A funeral service for David Whitney will be held at the Meaford United Church on Thursday July 14, 2022 at 11:00 am with visiting the hour prior.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Meaford United Church (cheques only) or the Wilfred Laurier University would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Fay, Ruth, and Jim, our sympathies are with you as we mourn the passing of Dave. We have many fond memories of our conversations with him. On our way home from school on Carl Gropp’s school bus Dave would make us laugh and feel better. He was a fun guy to be around.

Dear Fay, sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. I can recall our many conversations with the two of you when I was taking care of the cemetery and you were on your regular walks thru. His light hearted stories and opinions were just great. Guys like Dave make living in Meaford a more enjoyable experience. Best wishes for you Fay. Not sure if our paths will ever cross again, I hope so.

To the Whitney family, Kathy and I are so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. We had many great chats about farming, politics and life in general. His sense of humour was second to none. We also very much enjoyed our evenings together when it was time to settle the land rent for the year. I can still picture him sitting ramrod straight, driving his Belarus tractor. I think of you often as I am working in the fields. We will keep you in our prayers as you move forward.

Thank you Murray. I would be interested to know who your parents were. I am sure I would recognize their names.
