Dawson Smith of Meaford, and formerly of Port Colborne, passed away peacefully at Meaford Long Term Care Centre on Sunday, March 29, 2020 at the age of 89.

Born in Meaford on March 20, 1931, he was a son of the late Frederick and Nettie (nee Weaver) Smith.

Dawson was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia (nee Hoover) Smith in 2015.

He will be remembered fondly by Pat’s children; Ella Honsberger, Harvey Honsberger (Judy), and Harley Honsberger (Maryanne), and was a very special uncle to Leah, Chris, Mary and his many other nieces, nephews and their families.

Dawson loved the water! He spent many years working on the Great Lake Freighters, and in his free time he enjoyed boating, fishing, or just sitting near the water having a coffee and sharing stories.  Pat and Dawson enjoyed several summers at their trailer at Sunny Valley Campground in Chatsworth.

You’re right, Dawson was a very special uncle to me, Chris and Leah. He had a gruff demeanour but you knew that he loved you. Uncle Dawson also loved animals, like his dog Snoopy whom he affectionately called “Dummy”! I will always cherish my memories of my one and only uncle.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Grandpa Dawson.
I have lots of happy memories visiting at Grandma and Grandpa Dawson’s house. Whenever the weather was nice enough we were always outside enjoying the garden and birds and Grandpa Dawson’s latest attempt to stop the squirrels from getting to the bird food.  Grandpa always made sure he had treats for us grandkids and his great grandkids when we visited. I loved hearing stories about what is was like working at the Nickel factory whenever I could get Dawson chatting.
    Rest in peace.
