Winterdyk, Dirk

Dirk Winterdyk, born June 10, 1930 in The Hague, The Netherlands, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 23, 2020 at his residence in Meaford, ON.

Dirk is survived by his three children: Patricia Ann (Oliver), Donna May (Ferchuk), and John Winterdyk. He is also survived by his grandchildren Danny, Michael, and Alexander, and great grandchildren Alexander and Suzie.

Dirk and his family moved to Meaford in the late sixties and was well known to many in town. Together with his former wife Elizabeth “Els”, who predeceased him in Nov. 2017, they operated a delicatessen for several years in the 1970’s and then Dirk ran his own bookkeeping company on Sykes Street until his retirement.

After retiring, Dirk travelled extensively for both pleasure and humanitarian work that took him to countries such as China, Haiti, Poland, the Philippines, and Cuba, the latter of which became an annual trip for him until his health no longer allowed him to travel.  He spent the last several years of his life at home and was never shy to tell any visitors that he was well taken care of by the local PSW’s (personal service workers).

At Dirk’s request there will be no public service or memorial gathering.

In lieu of flowers and as your expression of sympathy, donations may be made, by cheque only please,  to Meaford Church of Christ Cuba Mission (tel.: 519-538-1750) or the Grey-Bruce Care Partners service (tel.: 519-271-9473) or through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON  N4L 1B9.  Messages of condolence may also be expressed through the website: www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Patricia, Donna, John and families: Although we have never met I want to send my condolences to you. I knew your dad for many many years thru physician offices where I was office nurse. We’ve had many phone visits and office chats/laughs over the years. I loved to hear about his trips to Cuba. Your dad was a very strong gentleman. Even on his worst days he was so brave. I know you will miss him terribly, as we all miss our parents, but his memories will remain forever.Treasure those and smile with every memory and picture taken over the years. Thinking of you at this sad time. Ann

My condolences to Dirk’s family for your loss. I was very saddened to hear of Dirk’s passing. I met Dirk through my work at the library, and I made numerous phone calls and home deliveries to him over the years. He always had a cheerful smile and stories to share, and he always made a point of asking how I and my young son were doing each time we met. He was a kind and generous individual who always put others ahead of himself. You will be missed Dirk.

Dear all of you who have been so kind as to leave a message in memory of my father. It was with a touch of sadness but more so joy to read your postings. The fact that you took the time to share some wonderful memories, is heartfelt by my sisters and me. May his gentle spirit, and his kind and generous heart stay with you in some small way. As he was so fond of reminding me towards the end of his time, “…memories is all I have and they mean everything…”
