Sandell, Edwin Francis 'Ted'

Ted never spent a day of his life in hospital. On February 28th, 2024, after a short and brave battle with cancer he passed away at home with his loving wife of 63 years by his side.

A loving husband to Mary Elizabeth (nee Wagner), proud father of John (Karen Pattison) and Lesley (Brian Kulchycki) and Grandpa of four; Darienne, Jackson, Brianna, and Sarah. His stories and warmth and passion for life will be sorely missed.

Born in the Beach community of Toronto on June 11, 1936, Ted was a son of the late Edwin John and Marie May (nee Hately) Sandell.  He was predeceased by sisters Audrey and Adrienne (George Walker).

Ted spent cherished childhood summers in Del Bonita Alberta. Ted would spend all his pre retirement years in Toronto as a lifetime educator. He left an indelible mark with so many children through his work with the Toronto School Board as teacher, vice principal and principal. He dedicated 32 years to classroom, school sports and life experiences.

Away from the classroom Ted helped build not only a cottage, enjoyed for 40 years by family and friends at Cheer Lake, but the passing of life lessons and skill sets, not the least of which were fishing, a true passion for him.

Retirement saw Ted and Mary relocate to the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay, in the community of Thornbury, where he would spend his remaining years as an active member of the community and of St George’s Anglican Church parish. He treasured his time spent with the church choir where he lent his beautiful tenor voice. Retirement also allowed the time to revisit his love for painting and world travels. Cherished travel memories he captured on canvas and are now hanging in the homes of many loved ones.

Ted loved to tell stories about his childhood and lifetime memories, adventures, and passions which he captured in his published memoirs “Seasons Remembered”. Reflections were also made on the joys of his many hobbies and interests, working in the garden, watching hockey, cooking, fishing, woodcarving and caring for his many faithful dogs over the years.

He was the most loving, kind, and considerate gentle soul. Always giving and never asking. His faith was unwavering, and he often referenced to Psalm 23 which was taught to him by his grandmother. Coupled with his love for family and mankind, his true legacy will live on. He will rest in peace and worry free.

A celebration of Ted’s life will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. at St. George’s Anglican Church in Clarksburg. Family will receive friends for visiting the hour prior to service, from 11:30 until 12:30 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to gather in the parish hall to share further remembrances of Ted following the service.

My sincere condolences to Mary and family. It was always in my mind that my dad would have been pleased by the fact that Ted enjoyed gardening and was a great steward of the land that Dad loved so much! I hope the tomatoes and onions do as well in Ted’s next garden. Rest in peace Ted.
    With fond memories,
    Gwen Wickens Hutchinson.

Mary, John, Leslie, we are so very sad to hear of Ted’s passing. He was such a kind gentle man, always wearing a big smile, holding a perpetual pipe and sharing wonderful stories with us by the campfires through many summers together at Lake Scugog.
Hugs from Heather, Sandy & Glenn Pearson
