Harvey, Ernest Alexander 'Alex or Al'

Alex passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at his home in Meaford on Friday, May 22, 2026 at the age of 82.

Born in Priceville on March 3, 1944, he was a son of the late Ernest and Beryl (nee Wood) Harvey.

Alex will be missed by his siblings Catharine (Jules) Giguere of Meaford, Betty (Ken) Lisk of Owen Sound, Delbert (Nancy) Harvey of Meaford, Bill (Carol) Harvey of Meaford, Barry (Anna) Harvey of Owen Sound, Wanda Harvey of Meaford, and Rick (Laura) Harvey of Meaford.  He was predeceased by his brothers Ronald, Terry, Donald, Peter (late Mary), Larry and Gerald and will be remembered fondly by his sisters-in-law Marilyn, Karen, Muriel, and Phyllis, and was predeceased by sister-in-law Sherry Harvey.  He was a wonderful uncle to many nieces, nephews and their families.  Alex was predeceased by his nephew Steven Giguere.

Alex was a hardworking and quiet man who normally kept to himself.  When he was out and about, he loved to chat and he never complained about anyone.

He quit school in grade eight to help his dad on the farm and then started to work with the Breadner brothers in Heathcote doing farm work.  Alex worked at the Hay Mill in Thornbury for 15 years, he bought himself a Chevy convertible during this time and was very proud of this car. He then worked for Dave McNicol until Dave passed away and the worked for Jim McNicol until Alex decided to retire.

He enjoyed going to watch baseball and broomball games, especially when his nephews and great-nephews were playing. Alex looked forward to the warmer summer weather because he could get his scooter out to go visit friends and family and make his way to the local Circle K and get his scratch tickets. In the winter, he would sit for hours doing his Word-Find puzzles. He had a great friend Merv, who would stop by about once a week to talk about the old days. It was nice for them to reminisce because they knew many of the same people from back in their early working days.

Alex was kindhearted, well liked and well known in the Meaford community. We were so fortunate have him as part of our big family, people would always ask us, “How’s Al doing?”. It was great that he had so many people who cared about him. He will certainly be missed.

A graveside service will be conducted at Markdale Cemetery on Friday, June 5, 2026 at 11 o’clock.  A celebration of Alex’s life will follow at the Meaford and St. Vincent Community Centre from 1 until 3 p.m.  Please join us to share stories and refreshments.
