Brown, Florence Myrtle

Florence passed away peacefully at the Owen Sound Hospital on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 in her 98th year.

Born on October 9, 1926 and raised on the 4th line of Euphrasia Township, Florence was the third of four daughters of the late Israel Curry and Edith (nee Raggett of England) Curry.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, C. Maurice Brown, and her sisters, May Boyd (late Herb), Helen Vickers (late Vernon and Gerald Boyes), and Pauline Palmer (late Don).

Florence had two sons, Larry Maurice Brown (Marjorie) and David Robert Brown (Denise Turner), four grandchildren; Rebecca Brown, Natalie Brown (Antoine Desilets), Ethan Brown (Nicole), and Danielle (Josh Lobb). She was the proud great grandmother of Hunter, Mason, Brooklynn, Daemia, and Kai.

Florence was a farmer at heart. She and her sisters worked hard on their parents’ farm. They didn’t have any of the modern conveniences that we now take for granted. She always valued hard work and people who didn’t shy away from it. She loved telling stories of those times.

Florence was proud of the crops, vegetables and flowers she grew her whole life. She was a regular contributor to the Meaford and Rocklyn Fall Fairs. To say she was competitive was an understatement.

Florence loved to sew and quilt. She was a member of the quilting group at the Meaford United Church for decades and enjoyed their quilt show each year.

She also was an avid hockey and curling fan. Her T.V usually had a game on in the winter time.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Meaford United Church on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 11 o’clock, with visiting the hour prior to service.

To Larry, David and families on the death of your Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother my deepest sympathy. She had a great sense of humour that made for good chuckles at many a party and family gatherings. I will always remember the wonderful pies, cakes and butter tarts she always served when we were haying and at threshing time…they were so so good. I also in retirement, quilting was her passion! She was a wonderful lady who will be missed but you will always have a bundle of wonderful memories.

My sincere condolences to Larry and David and their families. I have known Florence all my life, living in the same community for several years and then through our church in Meaford. I always admired the flowers she tended around her home and the quilts she worked on. She will be sadly missed.

I have fond childhood memories of visits at my Aunt and Uncle’s farm. With all that she had to do on the farm, my Aunt Florence was always welcoming to me and didn’t view me as another responsibility.

She was gracious to the end.

My sympathies to Larry, David and families.

Some of my most memorable times occurred at Uncle Maurice and Aunt Florence Brown’s farm, such as the first time I got to drive a tractor by myself (raking hay), or threshing times when many others were there to help. I also remember a fun time when Pauline was there helping out.

I give my condolences to Larry, Dave, and their families.
