Ryan, George David

George Ryan of Christie Beach passed away at the Meaford Hospital surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at the age of 83.

Born in Guelph on January 4, 1936, George was a son of the late Edward and Sarah (nee Winter) Ryan.

He will be missed dearly by his beloved wife of 61 years, Charlene (nee Johnson) Ryan.

George was the kind and patient father of Steve and Cheryl Ryan, Shelley and Rolf Wiebe, Susan and Kelly Hodgkinson, and Stacey Ryan.

He was the wonderful Grandpa of Shayna Ryan (Matt), Tiffany Hodgkinson (Nathan), Chandler Hodgkinson,  Emma and Sadie Ryan, and Great Grandpa of Ashton and Piper.

George was the dear brother of Jean Crick (late Findlay) and Mary Lee (Wes).  He was predeceased by his brother Ted Ryan (late Mary and Millie), sister Elizabeth Snyder (late Bob), and his sister  Ethel Whiten (late Wally).  He will be remembered fondly by his many nieces, nephews and their families.

George recently said with a big smile ‘I’ve had a good life’, and he truly did enjoy his life. In 1975 George and Charlene bought their place at Christie Beach and eventually they made it their permanent home.  The perfect place for them, he enjoyed tending to his garden, woodworking, and socializing with family and friends around the campfire.  Hosting gatherings and parties was definitely one of George’s favourite things to do.  He loved to visit and chat and he was able to do that as the owner of Jet Variety in Meaford for more than 18 years and also while he worked for Barbetta Orchards at the apple stand.  George was a proud lifetime member of the Kinsmen, and was always willing to help out in any way that he could.

A celebration of George’s life will take place at the Beaver Valley Community Centre on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 1 o’clock with a time for refreshments and sharing memories of George following the service. A private family interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery at a later date.

George was the father I never had. He gave me my first job at Jet Variety when I was 13. We were all family there. He would pick me up at the bottom of the hill & drive Susan & I to school on snow days. I cannot express how sad I am with this loss, and how blessed I was to have known him. May he rest in peace until we meet again. Thoughts & prayers to all of the family & friends ❤❤❤

I did not get to know Steve’s father as much as I would like, but I do remember his kindness and welcoming nature. I remember being invited to sit around the campfire with the whole family a few times. I always felt welcome by everyone the times I visited their home as much as Steve and Cheryl’s home. I am honoured to sing at his Celebration. Such a shock. A million hugs to all the family.

My sincere condolences to the Ryan family ……. I have fond memories of my daily visits to Jet Variety as a child. I’m sure all of my allowance and then some, was spent there. George was always so friendly at the store & a fixture in the neighbourhood back then. Thinking of all of you at this difficult time. XO

My heart is heavy today with our loss of George as I can see him smiling, and greeting me in my teen age years to work at Jet Variety. He was also kind and quick to share his wit and humour. Dear Charlene and all members of the family, we were so sad to receive your call with the news of George’s passing. The whole Mackenzie family sends their love and support to all of you.
George was a wonderfully kind man. He never stinted in helping others including us. During our more than 30 years as your friends and neighbours on Christie Beach, George was our “go to “ person for everything. He had a solution to every problem, kind words for everyone and a ready shoulder to lean on. We loved our times together with George and all the Ryan’s especially those shared around the campfire and dinner table and enjoyed and agreed with the toast George made at every gathering ”Only on Christie Beach”!
It feels like the end of an era. He will be very much missed.

We are deeply saddened; words fail in offering condolences to Charlene and her family.

We cannot imagine a better friend or neighbour than George Ryan. My earliest recollection is from winter, 1975-76. Mary, her sister, Gayle and I were staying at the cottage, as we rehearsed our music for our first ever gig. George saved us by keeping fuel in the old space heater while we were at work. Since that day, we have lost count of all the times he helped us out. We will both miss our chats with George. He and I often sat by his garage, ruminating on matters near and far, while we watched the birds at his feeders. He knew every bird in the neighbourhood.
We will miss his unique wave, as he rides his garden tractor by our house, smiling, and at peace with the world.

    Dear Charlene and family
I have so many wonderful memories of George when he owned the Jet Variety in Thornbury. He never gave me the boot for loitering. He just accepted that I wanted to be there and would even let me help out.
During our years with the Kinsmen/Kinettes, Randy and I had many a great times and lots of laughs.
George and Gus can now be together again, as they were all those years ago in Kinsmen. Heaven watch out, they are quite the pair.
Thinking of you all at such a sad and difficult time. Cherish all the wonderful times & photos you have had with this gentle and kind husband, dad, grandpa & friend.
