Coupland, George Kirk

George passed peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the Osgoode Care Centre, in his 87th year.

Loving husband of 62 years of Donna (nee Bassingthwaite), devoted father of Steven and his wife, Elecia Elliott of Osgoode, and Lori and her husband Ron Toews of Lethbridge. Proud grandfather of Chris Elliott (Aileen Gnov) of Burnaby, Collin Toews of Calgary, and Kevin (Michaela) Toews of Lethbridge. He will be deeply missed by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Janet Bassingthwaite, and nephews Don (Ole), Mark (Alison) and niece Jeananne (Joel) and their families.

Predeceased by his parents Davina and Robert Coupland and in-laws Grace Harrop (1993), Harold Bassingthwaite (1943) and Roy Harrop (1976).

Born May 8, 1936, Kirkton, Dumfrieshire, Scotland.  As a teenager, George came to Canada but always remained immensely proud of his Scottish heritage.  It was here that he met the love of his life Donna.  They married in 1960 in Brampton where they raised their family until moving to Huntsville in 1972. In 1980, they returned to Brampton where they stayed until 1997 when they retired to Meaford.

An avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, especially on his beloved Manitoulin Island. George loved nothing more than teaching his three grandsons how to fish and anyone else for that matter.  One of his greatest pleasures was seeing the thrill of excitement on his grandsons’ faces when they brought in their catch.  He was always ready and on hand with guidance and encouragement when they tried to land the big one.  George always took immense pleasure in retelling the stories of these great adventures.

George had a great capacity to make you laugh. Whether it was his daily coffee runs with his friends at Tim Horton’s in Meaford, or out and about, George had the ability to always make you feel welcome and loved.  He had the best sense of humour and loved to tease, even if it meant he receive same in return.

Special thanks to the staff at Osgoode Care Centre for their care and devotion to George and his family over the past five and half years.

A celebration of George’s life will take place in Meaford later in the Spring.
