Kiernan, Gilbert 'Gil'
April 4, 2025, Gilbert Kiernan passed away peacefully at the Meaford General Hospital at the age of 66, after a long and difficult battle with illness. Though sometimes seen as a little cranky—something those close to him knew well—he had a loving and loyal heart, shaped by deep losses and persistent pain.

He never truly recovered from the passing of his beloved wife Ina Cann in 2015, who was the love of his life. Their dog Buddy, also gone now, was another cherished companion. Gil’s ashes, along with their dog’s tags, will be buried with Ina, where they can all be together again.
He is survived by his children Tiffany Kiernan (Jeff Chanter) and Sheldon Kiernan (Kate) and was a proud grandfather. One of seven siblings, he is predeceased by his sister Sharon VanHuis (Ben) and lovingly missed and remembered by Steve Kiernan (Gloria), Susan Layton, Sandra Deforge, Wendy Baker, and Richie Kiernan. Also deeply appreciated is his mother-in-law Marguerite Cann, who supported and cared for him with unwavering kindness over the years.
A celebration of Gilbert’s life will take place in May, where family and friends will gather to remember and honour him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the emergency and nursing staff at Meaford General Hospital, especially Dr. Alanna Kozak, whose strength and compassion brought comfort during the hardest moments.

Gil was a kind, gentle, no BS quiet man. He dearly loved and protected his family. If he had something to say, he said it, and once he made up his mind, there was no more conversation. He dearly loved his wife and stayed so devoted to her even after she passed. He dearly loved and was so concerned about his brother Steve. They talked on the phone a lot and became quite close. That was wonderful to see. He dearly loved his sisters and would protect them to the end. Wendy was his baby sister who was always there for him through ups and downs. Cranky and happy times. Shoe shopping and bed shopping. I think he actually came to like shopping. He loved and bragged about his new bed. When we went to visit, he was giving us rides on it, he was so proud. I could go on forever. We love you, Gil, and you will forever be missed. Thank you for being a big part of our lifetime. Love you forever, Glo and Big Brother Steve.

Wendy, lovely to meet you at the hospital in emerg but sorry under such conditions. It was wonderful talking to you about knowing Gil for so long and his unconditional love for Ina. I’m sorry that he passed away so quickly but do feel peace knowing that he has finally moved on to be with Ina and can finally rest. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
