Lambe, Grace Lorraine

In her own home, and with her family by her side, Grace Lorraine Lambe (nee Almond) passed away peacefully on Monday, April 12, 2021 in her 93rd year.

She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Barbara Almond, husband and love of her life Gordon Lambe, her brother Maurice Almond (Ida), daughter Barbara Cann, and granddaughters Andrea Cann and Kristy Smith.

Grace was raised on the 4th line of St. Vincent Township and moved “below the hill” to the Lambe family farm where she and Gord raised their children and lived out their lives.  Grace was a kind soul, a well-loved pillar of the community, and friend to everyone she met.  She will be a sorely missed Mom and Mother-in-law to Darlene and Garry Smith, David and Sue Lambe and Larry Cann; Grandma Grace to Natasha and Dean Smith, Marsha and Darryl Moland, Amy Cann and Murray Fife, Blake and Stephanie Lambe, and Cailey Lambe and Tom McDonald.  Her twelve Great-Grandchildren were blessed to have her and will carry forward happy memories of stories, hugs and treats: Heather, Reegan and Reid Smith; Tessa, Gwen and Ethan Lambe; Hunter McDonald; Emma, Julia and Grant Moland and Hartley and Indigo Fife.  She will also be missed by dear friends including Jane, Charlie and Marjorie and many neighbours, nieces and nephews.  Grace was the matriarch and “Grandma Lambe” of the family business.  She combined her natural talents and resourcefulness with her ability to make every person around her feel special into a very successful business. Neighbours and friends, new and old, knew they could look forward to a smile, a visit and a heartfelt connection when they came into the store.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Hudson and Grace’s caregivers Cathy, Diane, and Rhonda and to her nurses Carrie, Glenna and Wes, not only for the care they provided Grace, but the support they extended to the family during this difficult time.

A private memorial will be held for immediate family and a celebration of her outstanding life will be planned for a later date.  Expressions of sympathy in Grace’s memory may be made to the Meaford Hospital Foundation or Care Partners (Cheques Only Please) through Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.  www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Our community has lost a true leader, a lady who will long be remembered and cherished by all who were ever touched by her gracious smiling character. Grace always had time to say ‘hello’ and give you her pleasant smile, no matter how busy she was(i.e. how many pies were in the oven). I will always remember with fondness Grace reminiscing about her and Grandma Faye picking peaches together when they were young women, and there was even a picture I can recall that I will never forget; a bunch of young women in an orchard posing together after taking in a harvest – their stoicism, their impeccable style, and their mischievous smiles. To say that Grace was ahead of her time would be a gross under estimation. She blazed a trail for so many of us Meaford girls. To be fearless and resilient, and to push on. I worked at the fruit stand as a young women, and I remember learning to roll out dough and pinch pie crust *sometimes with a hangover on Sunday mornings. Grace always ensured that we were working and learning, she was patient and particular and earnest. Later when I would visit the store as a young woman I would make sure I told her how elegant and beautiful she was. I felt it was important for her to know that and feel that, that she emulated her namesake, Grace. I will always cherish the memory of that woman, a stylish trailblazing babe who ran an empire. And though I wasn’t lucky enough to meet my Grandma Faye, I’m so glad I got to live in a world with Grandma Grace Sending lots of love to the family.

Her strawberry-rhubarb pie was my birthday celebration every year. Candles in a pie, not a cake.
    It was so amazing.
I feel so fortunate to have been able to introduce to my daughters to the ‘Grandma Lambe’s’ experience.
My oldest daughter (also named Grace) fell in love with Grandma Lambe’s Apple Pie at 3 years old.

Being a city girl I told him it would have to wait as I couldn’t yet drive. His answer was ” No time like the present” and put me in his truck and took me himself. I met this wonderful lady who treated me just like family . I still liked to just go out to visit if I was passing by. I am so glad Dave entrusted me with being able to help in her final days. Just heard this very sad news this morning. Grandma Lambe’s shops were a fixture on our recommended tour of the area for our B&B guests. Although we were in the shops ourselves countless times over the years, we frequently also benefited from the goodies that came back to the house with our guests. I actually blame Grace for some of my extra pounds! :-). We can honestly say that people from all over the world loved the shops, and many of them, including us, met and loved Grace Lambe. She was just one of the those people that you instantly like and want to know. This is a huge loss for so many people in addition to the family.
Although we do hope that the business carries on, we know that it will never be the same without Grace. Our hearts go out to the family. Sincerely, Linda and Paul

Miss Grace was Meaford’s Grande Dame!
She was an entrepreneur before we knew that actual word and inspired so many!
With a quick hug, a twinkling eye and a big smile she would inquire “ So Lee and Terry, what is the news from The Third?!”
    Safe Journey Grace…

Working at Grandma Lambe’s I wasn’t simply taught that women are strong; I saw it. I was around it every day. Grace exemplified what it meant to be a hard worker, a successful business owner, and a role model who I’d be lucky if I displayed even half the traits she displayed. I would always smile when tourists would come in and ask if they could “meet Grandma Lambe” because it made me proud knowing that I actually got to work with this amazing lady, learn from her, and hear her stories. She always made time for her customers, her staff, and most importantly, her community. It seemed like she was either making something to donate to an organization or on her way to support an event at least once a week. I’m not sure I ever saw her decline a request that supported a Meaford cause. I owe a lot to Grace and Grandma Lambe’s and I will miss her very much.

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of a very special lady. Grace was someone I admired very much, her work ethics, her strength to keep on going no matter what was put in front of her. She always had time to have a chat, find out what was new, how the family was doing. She was an amazing lady, someone everyone looked up to. I hope you find comfort in all the wonderful memories.

Condolences to all Grandma Lambe’s family, so saddened by your loss.

What a great pain for us all to bear together. She was a Mom, Grandma and friend to all of us.
My memories start as a young grade schooler with Barbara and I , ‘making stuff ‘ under her guidance, to her offer of employment at the stand when I needed a hand up and her assurance that she could teach me to bake edible pies and finally amiable chats at shows and the store in more recent times. What a priviledge to have shared life with such a kind, giving, loving and inspirational person and the family she has raised and influenced. Kudos Grace for a job well done.
Goodbye Sweet Lady, I will miss you.

In her very busy workdays, Grace took the time to impart wisdom and share friendliness with everyone who walked through the big wooden door of the Grandma Lambe Store. Thinking of all of Graces family. Grace will be missed by all who new her. She was a wife, mom, mother in law, grandmother, great grandmother first and was very caring to others. Several of our family worked at Lambes over the years in Meaford and Chatsworth. Hearing Graces voice on the phone always made you smile. Great memories in the good times and the sad times.❤
We feel blessed to have had her in our lives. Lonnie,Penny,Michelle,Mathew,Mandy ,Chad and families.

To Dave, Darlene, and the extended Lambe family:

Reading through this long string of heartfelt condolences speaks volumes about your Mom. She clearly touched all she came in contact with. And no wonder. She radiated warmth, kindness and generosity. Her cheery disposition was a tonic, her smile was an inspiration, and the twinkle in her eyes betrayed a fun-loving attitude tinged with more than a little hint of mischievousness.

She was a gentle woman, aptly named – indeed, rarely does a name fit a person so perfectly. Grace. We are all better for having known her. She was one of a kind, and will be forever missed.

On behalf of the Crapper clan, and in the name of my Mom and Dad, both of whom considered her a very good and close friend of long standing, we extend to you and yours our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences on the passing of your Mom.

Gord and Grace Lambe were second parents to Ann, Jane and I. They were our parents best friends for decades. Ann and Barbara led the way and Grace and my mother Jean Prittie delivered David, Darlene and me within hours of each other in February of 1955.

I spent countless hours at the farm playing and later working with David and Darlene under the watchful eye of Grace (and Gord). She was a loving and kind person who enjoyed surrounding herself with friends and family. To me she was my second mum.

Grace impacted my life in a very positive way as she was a role model for hard work, honesty, integrity and caring. Grace was there for me when I was born, went off to University, got my first job, married and when our son was born.

Gord will be so pleased to have Grace by his side once again… the love of his life. Gord was always quick with the one liners and I could hear him saying “took you long enough to get here … couldn’t you have been a little quicker?” Grace of course would have an appropriate answer.

Grace was truly a special person that will be missed by all!

On behalf of the Prittie, Howson and Hall families our heartfelt condolences.

I was so very sad to hear that Grace had passed. She was one of the nicest and the most amazing women that I have ever known. When I would go to Grandma Lambe’s she would always have time to talk to me. If I didn’t see her when I went in, I could usually find her in her office or in the kitchen making pies (she made the best lemon meringue pie). She was always interested in my family and she would tell me about hers. She spoke so highly of her family especially her late husband and told me how much she missed him. It won’t be the same without her there. She is at peace now and reunited with her beloved husband Gord and her daughter Barb. Her presence will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Lambe family at this time. Rest In Peace Grace.
