Scattergood, Harvey Walter

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the peaceful passing of Harvey Scattergood in the comfort of his home, on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the age of 72.

Supportive and caring husband to Edna Scattergood (nee Robillard), proud father of Jennifer Embacher (Stefan), Matthew Scattergood (Claudia), and loving Poppa to Olivia, Sawyer, Leo Embacher, and Sienna, Sloane, and Adrien Scattergood.

Predeceased by his maternal grandparents Walter and Ida Hofland, and parents Charles and Dorothy Scattergood.

Dear brother to Judith Somborac-Brisley (Peter), Nancy Ion (predeceased), Brian Scattergood (Jan), Bruce Scattergood, David Scattergood (Cheryl).

Loving in-law to Edna’s family Leonard and Anita Robillard (predeceased), Ken Robillard (Diane), Karen Lotton (Grant), Alan Robillard (Jeanne), Nancy Cook (David), Paul Robillard (Lucille).

Harvey will also be remembered fondly by his many nieces and nephews.

Born in 1950 in Toronto, to an officer in the RCAF, Harvey moved between many military bases across Canada and Germany before finally settling in Collingwood, Ontario after his father’s retirement from the forces.  Following his high school years in Collingwood, Harvey graduated from Lakehead University and Toronto Teachers’ College.

As a teacher with the Blue Water District School Board, Harvey thoroughly enjoyed his time in the classroom, impacting the lives of children throughout the community. Teaching, for Harvey, was more than a job — it was a passion and a privilege.

Harvey had many pleasures in life. He loved to read, travel and restore wood antiques to their natural beauty. He enjoyed both curling and camaraderie at the old Thornbury two-sheet curling club. He spent many summers hours at the cottage on Georgian Bay snorkelling, swimming, and fishing from his prized boat, the Smokercraft. He loved family gatherings with good food, tales of times past, jokes, and companionship around the campfire.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the dedicated medical community who, through their support and care for Harvey, gave us extended time with him.  We will forever be grateful.

A Celebration of Harvey’s Life will take place at the Marsh Street Centre in Clarksburg on Sunday, June 11, 2023 from 1 until 4 o’clock, with tributes shared at 2 o’clock.

We would like to send our deepest condolences. Our family remembers Mr. Scattergood with great fondness. He was so great with the kids at school. It did not matter if you were in his class or not. At home time or break, his hallway would echo with shoutouts to him from all the kids. He made all the kids feel special by the attention he gave them through pranking and joking with them.

    Sincerely
    The Frisby family.

My sincere condolences to the entire Scattergood family. Unfortunately, I only had the opportunity to meet Harvey on a few occasions, but in those limited times he certainly struck me as a very kind, welcoming, and genuine man.

I’ve been lucky enough to be close friends with Matt over the last 20+ years and I have seen him become such a loving husband, an amazing father, and a dedicated friend to so many. This, of course, did not happen by accident and I believe that Matt is a reflection of the parents that raised him and the environment he grew up in.

I have no doubt that Harvey would have, rightfully, been so very proud of the family that he and Edna created.
To me, that family is very much a reflection of him as a father and speaks volumes about the type of person he was.

I am so sorry for the entire family’s loss. Losing a loved one is a heart wrenching event, but I am certain that he will live on in each of you and those that he left behind will continue to reflect the best of him.

May you find strength in each other and joy in your memories.

Harv was one of the best!

Not only did he learn alongside you, he had such a curiosity and humour about him that transferred over to all of his students. He wasn’t just a school teacher, he gave us some life lessons too.

    He will be forever missed.

    Love to you all!

I’m sorry for your loss and the passing of Harvey Scattergood, our dear neighbor at the cottage. It’s never easy to say goodbye to someone who has played such an integral role in our lives and childhood memories.

Harvey Scattergood was not just a neighbor but also a teacher, always willing to share his knowledge and passion for the natural world. One of the many things he taught me was about the different species of amphibians, including the mudpuppy.

I remember the day when I found a mudpuppy and Harvey was quick to point out that it was an amphibian like frogs. It was fascinating to see his passion for nature and the way he shared it with me.

Harvey also loved to take us fishing as children. I remember how excited we all were when he would announce that he was taking us out on the lake. He would patiently teach us how to cast our lines, bait our hooks, and reel in our catches. I’ll always cherish those memories of spending time with him in nature.

Another memory that stands out is when he deconstructed a wasp’s nest and explained the complex workings of a wasp colony. Harvey’s eagerness to share his knowledge and love for nature with others was truly inspiring.

To Harvey Scattergood’s family, please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. May his memories bring you comfort, and may you find solace in knowing that he touched the lives of many and left a positive impact on all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

    Dear Mrs. Scattergood and family,

I was so sad to hear this news when my mom shared the obituary this morning. I was lucky to be in Mr. Scattergood’s class twice – in grade 5 and grade 7. He was my very favourite teacher, and I felt like we had a special connection. He would joke around with me but also usually had to yell at me about once a day for talking in class! He sent me into the hall many times but I still loved him. He was an amazing teacher who was fair and engaging. You could tell he loved teaching and deeply cared about his students. A truly special man.

My deepest condolences to your family at this difficult time. He is remembered very fondly by many.

We were surprised and saddened to hear of Harvey’s death – too young. We send our sympathy. Harvey willingly took a volunteer from India into his classroom in the early 80’s and we spoke about her many times since then. He taught one of our daughters and when I told her, Erica said “He was one of my favourites”
