Smith, Joan Dorothy

It is with profound sadness that the family of Joan Smith of Thornbury announces her passing on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the age of 88. Joan left us peacefully and on her own terms.

Born on May 9, 1932 in Kearney, ON, Joan was a daughter of the late Harry and Helen (nee McManus) White.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Glenn Smith in 2012.

Joan leaves behind her children Paul Smith and his wife Michelle of Vineland, Bill Smith of Toronto, Sara Smith of Thornbury, and was predeceased by her daughter Catherine Smith.

She was the much loved grandmother of Christopher Smith and his wife Leah of Burlington and ‘GG’ to Sloane.

Joan loved her career as a RNA (now known as a RPN), and later in her career worked for Care Partners. During the ‘in between years’ Joan was a wonderful stay at home mom and followed her beloved Glenn to 10 different places in Ontario.  She has touched many lives in the various towns and cities they spent time in.

There will be a private family graveside service at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kearney, ON.

Will miss your mom’s beautiful smile. Joan was a part of the knitting club at the library that I belonged to and she always had the patience to show someone new how to knit or pick up a dropped stitch. She was lovely and I will miss seeing her.

To Paul & Michelle, Bill, Sara, Christopher, Leah and Sloane.

I am sorry to hear of Aunt Joan’s passing. Take comfort in the fact that she is reunited with Uncle Glenn, Catherine and all who went before her. I find these words from Laura Ingalls Wilder helpful. “Remember me with smiles and laughter. For that is how I will remember you all. If you can only remember me with tears, then don’t remember me at all”. Please know that others share this loss with you.

Joan was so loved by so many people. Everyone who knew her was touched by her enormous love – she had a heart as big as her momma’s stove. I have such sweet and precious memories of my Aunt Joan and Uncle Glen and I will hold these close to my heart. Now they both are together and in peace.
Louise, Sarah, Amanda, and myself have a huge Aunt Joan-shaped hole in our hearts and in our lives. We will include special prayers for Paul, Sara, Bill, and their families, in our thoughts and prayers.

What My Aunt Meant To Me
    Author Unknown (modified)
Aunts have no wands or wings,
So they work with wisdom, love, and things.
    Having taken on this role,
You loved me right down to my soul.
    You offered kindness
And greetings with a hug and kiss,
Each freely out of love which I will miss.
I chose a twinkling star in the sky at night ,
To say a prayer for you to it’s bright light.
You’re in God’s Heavens now and no longer in pain,
In my thoughts, you’ll always remain
    How lucky I was,
    How blessed I’ve been,
You were more than my Aunt,
    You were also my friend.

I love you and miss you Auntie Joan
Thank you for always being there for me.

    Love always
