Wheeler, Joan Helen

Joan passed away peacefully at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at the age of 84.

Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late James and Wilda (nee Gibbons) McAfee.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank Wheeler, in 2018, and by her sister Lois Morton Murray.

She was the much-loved mother of Rhonda Wheeler-Grein (Steve McKenna), Kevin Wheeler (Wendy Campbell), Dwayne Wheeler (Jill Clements); cherished Grandma to Terry (Laura), Brent (Courtney), Vanessa, Kyle, Jacob, James, Catherine and Laurel and Great Grandma to Peyton, Avary, Kaelin, Declan, Tayla and Jordan. She is survived by her step-mother Winnie Stadelbauer and her sister Melodee McAfee.  Joan will be remembered fondly by the McAfee, Gibbons, and Wheeler families with many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

Joan was a loving and supportive wife, mother and grandmother and great grandmother.   She enjoyed spending time walking, biking, reading and she was a great shopper.  Joan and Frank relocated wherever his job as a police officer took them.  They have lived in Meaford, Hanover, Kitchener, Mount Forest, and eventually were very happy to retire back ‘home’ to Meaford. In more recent years both Frank and Joan required some extra care and support and their family will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff at Cider Mill at Sunnyside Home for everything they have done to make their time there more comfortable.

A funeral service will be conducted at Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 1:30 p.m., with a service of committal and interment following at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the World Vision where Joan donated for 43 years or the Sunnyside Foundation in Kitchener who treated Frank and Joan so well in the last few years, would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

My condolences to the Wheeler and McAfee families. Frank and Joan were long time residents of Meaford and it was great to see them when they retired here. They were often out on their bikes, ending up at McDonald’s for a coffee break.

Rhonda, Kevin, Dwayne and families: I’m so sorry for your loss and send my deepest sympathies. I have so many fond memories of my cousin Joan and when young being together on the Umberella Island. Later she married Frank and we were lucky to meet up with them in Kitchener and raise our families near each other for many years. We went to Expo 67 in Montreal together twice, shared meals many times over the years, and Frank took us on many fun Sunday afternoon drives when he didn’t have to work, and, saw villages we’d never been to in the surrounding area. Really missed them when they moved to Mount Forest and Meaford. We’d got together if possible when passinig through, but time was never enough for a really good visit.

These will be many fond memories I will always cherish of a favourite cousin.
