Thomas, John Douglas 'Doug'

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of John Douglas Thomas on Thursday, August 22, 2024, peacefully at his home in Meaford with his loving wife by his side, overlooking his garden, at the age of 84, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Doug was the beloved husband of Ethel Gwendlyn Thomas (nee Lyndon) for 63 years and proud father of Bradley Douglas Thomas (Christine) and Brent Ian Thomas (Milvia), and beloved grandpa to Sarah, Matthew and Isabel Thomas.

Born in Meaford on January 24, 1940, Doug was a son of the late Mary Doris (nee Dick) and John ‘Jack’ Thomas of both Niagara Falls and Meaford.  He will be missed by his brother Carl Edward Thomas (late Liz) and many nieces and nephews.  Doug was predeceased by his sister Judith Ellen Fox and will be remembered fondly by his brother-in-law James, and was predeceased by his brother-in-law Donald Lyndon (late Cheryl).

Doug very much enjoyed his 38 years of employment with Bell Canada in Toronto and the Toronto International Airport. After his retirement he then joined Bell Mobility.  He loved tending to his garden and enjoyed carpentry projects.  Family meant the world to Doug.

The family extend their sincere thanks to Dr’s Euler, Allan and Rogers and the staff at the Clarksburg Medical Group, to Dr. Aboo and the oncology team at Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital, and to the VON nursing staff and family and friends who have helped us out along the way.

Family and friends will gather for a private celebration of Doug’s life at the Meaford Hall.

As your expression of sympathy, and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Ethel, I am saddened to learn of Doug’s passing. I enjoyed our many conversations over the years and I am sure he took comfort that his departure’s backdrop was his beloved garden with you by his side. I am sure you will be surrounded by family and friends as you face many changes now, and I can’t help but think that Doug would be happy to not be dealing with any clearing out the basement or the garage. Oh, how he did not want to take on that task! I wish you great courage, strength and comfort in the days ahead.

Ethel, so sorry to read of Doug’s passing. I’m sure that looking upon his gardens gave him some peace. I pass your place often and will always remember Doug the day he dug about 40 hostas from my garden to fill the “empty “spots in your gardens. My thoughts are with both of you at this time of sorrow.
