James, Julia Margaret 'Marg'
Julia ‘Margaret’ James (nee Richmond) of Ravenna passed away peacefully, Friday, September 8, 2023, at Grey Gables Nursing Home in Markdale.

Dearly loved wife of the late Jesse James and loving mother of the late Laura James.
Survived by her loving son Mark and his wife Karen, grandchildren Ruth and Rolan, sister Jean Gillespie, brother Bill Richmond and sister-in-law Muriel Smith (Eric). Predeceased by parents Clarence and Margaret Richmond (Acres) and stepmother Hazel Richmond.
Margaret lived her life in service to others: to her family, to her friends, to her community, and to her students. She was a loved and respected teacher who intimately understood that a loving, caring and understanding adult, has the power to shape a child’s life and change the world. She ran her classroom with quiet confidence, with the expectation that all students would give their best, and with the understanding that each child had special gifts, and not necessarily academic ones. She gave selflessly to her church, teaching in the Sunday School, serving as deacon, and was organist for more than a generation. She showed how to live one’s faith through loving actions, and strong, steadfast determination. She was a valued colleague and a loyal friend. She was a town girl who became a farm woman, and as such, successfully learned to cook, and bake, and can, and pickle. She became famous for her butter tarts, and gravy, and always had a pot of coffee brewing and cookies ready for anyone who came through her door. Above all, she was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She taught her children and grandchildren that giving is better than taking, that quiet confidence is better than pride, and that love, kindness, hope, and faith support us through life’s challenges, heartbreaks, and triumphs. She was a truly remarkable woman and her influence, support, hope, and love have made the world a better place.
Please join Marg’s family for a service celebrating her life on Saturday, September 30th, 2023 at 11 o’clock, at First Baptist Church, 72 Bruce St., Thornbury.

Mark and Karen and Family;
Words cannot express the sadness in losing a loved one. Margaret was a lovely, caring lady. I can see her playing the piano in church and the last time at Grey Gables where I saw her.
The lovely tribute of Marg said it all, well spoken.

Our condolences to Mark, Karen, and family,
Margaret and Jesse were the first people Judy and I met when we arrived on the 6th Line as “the new couple from Toronto who bought Gib McArthur’s place”. Over the years we came to value their friendship and appreciate the many ways Jesse and Margaret helped us.
In one of my last visits with Jesse, he stopped at the end of our lane and called me over to his truck. He said he wanted to show me something that was very important to him.
It was a photo of Margaret.

Dear family I’m incredibly sorry to hear of Mrs James passing although I’m most certain she’s in Heaven enjoying every minute of it just as she did life in earth!
Mrs. James was one of my teachers in public school and she encouraged my singing as a itsy bitsy little girl and I carried and used that talent proudly right into my adulthood, she also taught me my very first Sunday School lesson too. See you Mrs. James when the trumpet sounds!.

It is very sad to hear of Margaret’s passing. She was definitely part of the foundation of the 6th line which I will always consider home. Margaret was a great neighbour and would stop by to see my father once in a while while she was out on her faithful daily walk down our side road.
Margaret played the piano for many many years at the Rock Union Annual Picnic Service and picnic. She was always smiling and welcoming and I always looked forward to seeing her there.
My sincere condolences to Mark, Karen and their family in their profound loss. I know you have many wonderful memories of your mother and grandmother.

Walking into Mrs. James’ class as a 7 year old was like experiencing the warm sun on your skin after a long winter. Indeed, I still remember her encouraging each and every one of us in the classroom and recognizing our unique gifts. That year I became an avid reader and soaked up as much as she would teach me.
It’s with sadness that I received the news of her passing. Taking that year of experience, I can only imagine how such a loving and caring woman will be missed by her family. My deepest condolences and heartfelt thanks for sharing her with me as a child in Thornbury.
