Chapman, Leonard Mervyn 'Merv'

Leonard Mervyn “Merv” Chapman — our loving, protective, dedicated, and hardworking Dadieo and Bumpa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Brightshores Hospital in Owen Sound. He was held in the arms of his children and granddaughter, listening to Heartbeat by Buddy Holly. He transitioned, naturally with a calm presence and a smile on his face, surrounded by deep love.

Born in Cambridge, England, Merv was the son of Leonard and Eileen Sarah (nee Isaacs) Chapman . He came to Canada in 1980, where he was warmly welcomed by his extended Canadian family and went on to build a beautiful life rooted in family, craftsmanship, and connection.

Merv was a true family man through and through. He lived life fully and joyfully, creating lasting memories with his children through adventures like skiing, swimming, sailing on his beloved boats, biking, camping, fishing, and traveling. He had a deep love for the outdoors and music—often waking the household on weekends to the sounds of The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Led Zeppelin, and Bruce Springsteen. These moments will forever echo in the hearts of those who shared them.

In 1998, Merv made his home at Chestnut Hill Farm in Meaford, where he felt deeply connected to the rolling hills and the beauty of the bay. There, he raised sheep, pigs, horses, cows, geese, and ducks, embracing a life close to the land.

A highly respected craftsman in the British automotive world, Merv trained with City & Guilds UK and Jaguar Automotive. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he founded Jagtech Jaguar KW, specializing in the restoration of high-end British automobiles including Jaguars, Rolls Royce, MG, and Bentleys. His skill, precision, and passion were recognized by many.

Merv is survived by his best friend and former wife, Sheila Hicks — mother of his children — who remained a close confidant. He lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Anna (Don), Rachael (David), Paul, Rebekah (Mark), and Hailly (Emerson). Beloved Bumpa to Sam, Adrian, Brian (step-grandson), Josh, Emma, Locklyn, Oliver, Rowan, James, Elliot, Isaac, William, Leo, Freddy, and Naz.  Proud Step Great-Grandpa to Aries and Briar.

He was deeply loved by his sisters, Rose and Patricia, and their families: Peter, Sarah, Nathan (Joanna), Mark, and Danielle, and is predeceased by Gareth.

Merv was a father figure to many and was adored by all who knew him. His presence was steady, generous, and full of quiet strength.  He had a sunny disposition and infectious humour. He is missed and loved beyond words.  A true friend to many.

He faced a courageous battle with MELAS disease and Parkinson’s. Our family is forever grateful for the compassion and care shown to him by the doctors, nurses, and PSWs. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Doleman, Dr. Nacalla, and Dr. Allen for their support.

Merv’s legacy is one of love, resilience, adventure, and devotion to family.  His spirit will live on in every memory, every song, and every moment shared.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at Lakeview cemetery in Meaford Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 2 pm.  A reception will follow at the Meaford Hall, upstairs in the Galleries.

‘Please wear colour, as dad never resonated with black – he was someone who carried his own light, and we would love to reflect that. Thank you.’

Immortality

Do not stand at my grave and weep;

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush

I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there.

I did not die.

My earliest and most vivid memories begin when I was about three years old, walking down the high street of a small village in Cambridgeshire England with my father. My little hand was wrapped tightly around his as we made our way through the winding streets to the newspaper shop for the Sunday paper. I would choose a Dinky car or a Matchbox toy, and on the walk home I would clutch my new treasure while my father carried the paper under his arm. Looking back, I think that may have been where my love of British cars first began.

Dad will forever be remembered as a Friend and Mentor. Having worked with dad at Jagtech for many years we shared so many great memories at Jagtech as well as some great sailing adventures.

I feel honored to have been there to comfort him over the weeks and months before his passing. Knowing that he felt Rachael and I’s commitment to him in his times of need. Ultimately comforting him during his peaceful time of transition. He passed comfortably and at his natural choosing.

Deeply sorry for the passing of your Dad Paul. As you know I have a great respect for your Dad and thrived on the pholosophical and sarcastic conversations we shared. Let us remember his sense of humour and free spirit. My condolences to your family and all those that he called his friends.

Thank you Howard. You were always a close friend. During his last days we would reminisce about Jagtech and we spoke of stories of you and John. They were great memories.
Thank you for being such a great friend.

Merv, Sheila and their little family were some of the first people that I met when I moved to Meaford 25+ years ago. I will always remember the food, laughter and drinks over card games. Lots of joy and love. Merv was indeed a gem. We did lose touch but I have such fond memories. Merv, travel well, your love is carried on in your beautiful children.

He was such a wonderful funny man. I loved going to see Anna when he was home as he always made me laugh. The earth has lost a gem and Heaven has gained an angel.

Mervyn was my much loved and adored big brother. As a child he was always looking for the next adventure and experiment often using my sister and I as Guinea Pigs. As an adult he had such a big heart and loved all his family and wasn’t afraid to tell us all. He was so funny without realizing it and had good advice when it was needed. Heaven has definitely got another angel. Love you forever Merv. Thank you for all the special memories xxx

One of my favorite memories of Merv was when Dave, me and the kids had gone to the farm for a party when we walked in there was Merv sitting on the floor with a punch bowl by him pouring any kind of booze that was in the cupboard, looking up at us saying, we don’t drink you know, he was one of the best a real character and he will be sadly missed by all of us

Uncle Merv was like a father to me, he taught me so many life lessons like how to enjoy the little things in life, how to not take life so serious and just have fun. He was truly an amazing man he had the biggest heart with a great sense of humour like the time we woke my mum up at 3 in the morning to wish her happy birthday only to find out we were a day early. We had so many great times together like when we were kayaking down in Algonquin Park or just sitting have a beer chatting. It was truly an honour to have him at my wedding and to show him Poland and the life I have built. Through him I gained a sense of adventure and try to enjoy everything life has to offer and smile whilst doing it. He will always be my hero, love you uncle Merv

Merv was like a second dad to us when we moved to Canada, his infectious laugh and silly jokes will forever be etched in my memories. He was always the light in every room and never failed to have some wild tale to share with us. His ability to find the funny and always make the best of every situation is something I will carry with me always ❤️
He will be missed so much by all.

Dear uncle Merv, I write this through tears. You were an amazing man who made me smile and laugh. You taught me that even through the hardest days there is strength and if you you have the courage everything will be OK. You were like a father to me and I will miss and love you forever. Thank you for all the memories and making life that bit better. I will cherish our time together. Rest in peace.

My condolences to Paul and all of Merv’s family. The two of you were my favorite customers while I worked at Parkway Ford. That braying laugh would turn around any trouble I may have had from work. With wise technical advice on my own vehicles and a big welcoming smile no matter how busy they were- he was a delight.
A great man, I thought of you both whenever Fordwich was mentioned.
