Charters, Lois Ellen

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lois Charters (nee Pascal) after a six-year battle with cancer.

“Gramma-Lo” to her two grandchildren, she will be sadly missed by Simon and Eli, her son Jason and daughter-in-law Caryn, brother Douglas and sister-in-law Barbara, and her high school sweetheart and beloved husband of 56 years, Richard.

Lois was born in Montreal to Florence Klineberg and Israel “Sonny” Pascal in 1946.  She lived a life of great adventure, hiking and biking with Richard across many beautiful places in North America and Europe as well closer to home, and even completed an end-to-end of Ontario’s Bruce Trail.  She was an avid reader, a teacher, a yoga instructor, a personal trainer and made many mixed tapes at just the right b.p.m. for the aerobics classes she led for years. Despite once claiming she had no strong opinions, Lois had thoughts on just about everything, getting most fired up about the injustices of the world.  She was devoted to her family, a great friend, a great worrier, a lover of dogs, a master of the Rice Krispie square and, even though she would never admit it, she was an inspiration to many who knew her.  We miss her deeply already.

Special thanks to Dr. Geoffrey Liu and his team at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre for six years of exceptional care and many thanks to the incredible staff at Brightshores Meaford Hospital as well.  A celebration of life will be held in the future with details to be announced.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation or the Bruce Trail Conservancy would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Lois started out as a neighbour but over years became a dear friend. Over her 6 year battle she became my hero. She gave cancer the best fight she had.
I miss her terribly. Will we meet again? In Lois’ word “Sure”.

Lois was one of a kind! A beautiful person with a beautiful heart and soul. I’ll remember her forever, frozen in my mind, laughingly admonishing me for some teenaged misdemeanor. My love and deepest condolences to Richard, Jason, Caryn, Simon, and Eli – all of whom I hold close to my heart. Lois will be missed. May her memory be a blessing.

I am so sad to learn of Lois’ passing. Our lives took us in different directions after London and I regret losing touch with the Charters.
I will remember Lois fondly, a caring and giving person. She was so good to me and my kids during a very difficult period in my life. I will be forever grateful.

Thinking of our dear friend, Lois. I loved talking books and exercise with her. Listening to her talk with pride about her grandsons. I enjoyed her longstanding almost sisterly relationship with Dan. I remember her love of the dogs. And what a great marriage! May her memory be a blessing.

    Dear Richard and Jason,
John and I want to express our heartfelt condolences. We have so many happy St Clements memories that include Lois. I fondly remember exercising with Lois in your living room listening to Whitney Houston. I remember sharing healthy recipes and talking about books. I know you share many happy memories and hope they give you all comfort.

Dear Rick, we were very saddened to see the news of Lois’s passing in last weekend’s Globe. We remember our teenage years in the Draper gang in Montreal, when you and Lois first fell in love, and our first months of marriage as your neighbours in the same building as you two in Hampstead. We particularly recall sharing our first Christmas morning there 55 years ago. Although our lives and careers put miles between us, we were always glad to share our news and hear yours. On the occasions when we did actually see you, we were always inspired by Lois’s grace, intelligence, kindness and energy and, of course, your continued mutual love and respect. Like you and your family, we will always hold Lois in our hearts. With deepest condolences, Steve and Maureen

Richard and Jason – Lois was a gem, the most delightful soul of anyone I knew. Through my childhood and beyond Lois supported me and showed empathy towards me at the times I most needed it and for that I will be forever grateful. I was so very fortunate to have her as my aunt. I will remember Tuesday pizza night fondly, the way she (and only she) could rib my father, giggling through yoga classes in Sarasota, discussions about exercise science and physiology before it was remotely trendy, and of course the most amazing chocolate rice krispie squares in the world. My deepest condolences to you, and a dedication of love and gratitude.
