Douglas, Lois Marguerite

Surrounded by family and love, Lois Douglas passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington on Saturday, November 9, 2024 in her 95th year.

Lois was born in Owen Sound on September 18, 1930, a daughter of the late Stanley and Alice (nee Howey) Murray.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband and soulmate Murray Douglas on September 19, 2005 after 52 years of marriage and missed him deeply for the rest of her life.

Predeceased by her dear sister Yvonne Thom (late Jim) and brother-in-law Mack Douglas (late Betty) and niece Gail Becks.

Lois was the cherished Mother of Nancy Douglas of Burlington and Julie Douglas-Vail (Brad) of Meaford and the adoring Grandma of Matthew Douglas-Vail (Danielle) and Allie Douglas-Vail.

She will be fondly remembered by her nephew Robert Thom and nieces Janis Douglas (Jack) and Lorraine Kindrat (Peter). Lois will be dearly missed by special family friend Rita Giachini and as Mom #2 by Laurie Wright.

She grew up on a farm in Holland Township and spent most of her life with Murray on Strathnairn Farm, before moving to Georgian Beach, Meaford where she and Murray built their retirement home on the water.

Lois loved her career as a public school teacher and was a talented singer and pianist who took many prize winning choirs to the Kiwanis Music Festival in Owen Sound. She enjoyed gardening, music and dancing and was happiest when setting a beautiful table and cooking for her family. No one will ever make a better apple pie than Grandma!

Lois’ memory will be cherished by all who knew her and forever in the hearts of her family.

Family will receive friends for a public visitation at Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 5 until 8 p.m.  A funeral service will be conducted at Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 11 o’clock, followed by a reception and a service of committal and interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford.

My condolences to you Nancy and Julie on the loss of your mother. I knew her as my very patient music teacher (I was the most unmusical person of all time). She was a lovely lady and I am certain you will hold your memories dear.

    To Lois’s family,

I have many fond memories of teaching with Lois and we shared lots of laughs. Quentin and I appreciated her no nonsense and effective way of teaching. Quillan enjoyed her as a teacher.
I remember when the grandkids were born, she was thrilled.

My condolences on the loss of Mrs. Douglas. She was my grade 5 teacher at SVE & the best teacher I ever had! I always remember that on the first day of school she told us, “if you don’t remember anything else that I teach you this year, always remember that A LOT is two words!” And, I never forgot that.
She was a lovely lady & a wonderful teacher, I definitely learned a lot from her. My sincerest condolences to her entire family.

My sincere condolences Nancy and Julie on the loss of your Mom. She was our travelling music teacher in the old one room schoolhouse system. She took many of us from SS#17 Minniehill to the Kiwanis Music Festival which I always enjoyed. I got to know your Mom well as an adult and it was always a pleasure to talk with her.
    She will be deeply missed.

Nancy and Julie, my condolences to you! I remember your Mom trying and trying to teach me to sing at White’s school and at Bethesda school. I couldn’t carry a tune if I had pail to put it in. She was quite frustrated with me. The old guard from the 11th line are moving on. Sorry I cannot be there on Thursday. I have a cold.

    Nancy, Julie, and Brad,
Our very deepest sympathies on the loss of your mom.
Lois was an excellent teacher and it was a real pleasure to be on the same staff with her at SVE for so many years. Wayne and I were happy to find ourselves neighbours of your parents after we moved to Lakeshore Road in 2000.
Lois was always friendly and gracious, justifiably proud of her children and grandchildren, and terrifically musical. Her musical talent was a gift that she generously shared with her students and the world. She will live on in the memories of so many people whose lives she touched.

    Dear Nancy, Julie and family,
My deepest condolences. From sorrow and sadness will emerge LIGHT as you remember and tell stories of your Mom and grandmother that you will always cherish. I will always remember her sense of humour and laughter. I will always remember how she instilled a great sense of pride in us to excel in choral singing winning many 1st place awards each year at the Kiwanis Music Festival in Owen Sound that lead me to sing in several Niagara community choirs.
I remember too, the fun times our Moms had dressing up for Halloween and driving up and down the 11th line or the quilts the Whites Willing Workers made each winter for Missions.

Nancy, Julie, Brad, Matthew and Allie,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of Lois, your mother and grandmother. It is always difficult to say goodbye to a mom, no matter how old or unwell she may be. I am glad that you will have kept many happy memories of your years as “next door neighbours” ! How nice that must have been for all of you.
I only knew her briefly as a teacher at SVE , for a few years before she retired, but I enjoyed chatting with her whenever I ran in to her at the grocery story. She liked to update me on the adventures of Matthew and Allie, where they were and what they were doing!
