Higginson, Mark Joseph

Mark Joseph Higginson was taken from us far too soon, passing away suddenly on the Higginson Family Farm on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at the age of 61.

Born in Toronto on November 4th, 1959; he was the only son of the late Gerald and Margaret Higginson.

Moving to Meaford in his teens with his family, he would meet Sherree (Richards) in highschool, play the bass guitar in a band named COW and cause lots of mischief. He would leave Meaford to work in the mines out West and years later reconnect with Sherree in London, Ontario. They would spend the next 27 years creating a beautiful life in the Thornbury and Meaford Area; finally settling in at the Family Farm on the 3rd Line in Meaford. Mark and Sherree have three amazing children, Tarynn Lennox (Brett), Kenzie Higginson (Brady) and Brogan Higginson (Alexa).  Although a man of few words, he had a strong and loving presence in his kid’s lives.

Mark came into his own when he became “Poppa”. He was the proudest Poppa to Locklyn and Atlas Lennox and Brooks Higginson. Locklyn and Atlas loved their play dates on the family farm with Gamma and Poppa, living the country life and watching Poppa on his tractor. With Brooks arrival in February, Mark was thrilled at the addition of a Higginson Family named Grandson. While his time with Brooks was short, he loved him dearly.

Mark was a good brother to Beth Robinson (Paul) of Toronto, and Uncle to his three nieces and many great nieces and nephews.

Landscape design and creation was his passion. Incredibly talented, Mark would free hand all landscape designs and would spend many hours at his drafting table. Having completed his Landscape Design & Technology Diploma at Fanshawe College, he would spend the next 30 years running a successful Landscape Company, Natural Stonescapes. Winning numerous accolades throughout his career and being recognized by the Landscape Ontario Awards of Excellence.

Mark loved spending time on the farm, watching his kids and grandkids enjoy the country life and summers in the pool. He loved a good game of golf with a few beers and enjoyed watching golf on Sundays, with a few beers. He had the same admiration for birds as his father did, and kept many feeders throughout the farm and they were always full of sunflower seeds. While he had many loves, his family was the true one.

In support of Marks love for wildlife and in lieu of flowers, the family is asking anyone wishing to express their sympathy to donate to The Canadian Wildlife Federation. Sherree, I am so sorry to hear this. I knew Mark just a bit, but enough to know that he was kind, hard-working, smart, talented, and I wish that I had more time to get to know him more. I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but hope that your family is close. So many people have so many good memories of Mark. Vic

It was just devastating to hear this news. While it’s true that too many years passed between us, I occasionally would remember times spent with Mark and I couldn’t help but smile. And laugh. I know it will take a while, but that smiling and laughing will return because that’s just the impact Mark made. Rest well, rest in peace Mark.

Sherree, Tarynn, Kenzie, and Brogan you guys are in my prayers. So too are the Grandkids Sherree. Wonderful that Mark was a Poppa. I pray for the very best for you all.

Sorry to hear of the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and brother. My memories go back to when Mark and Beth would come up every summer from Toronto and we would spend time at the beach or just enjoying the outdoors at the Higginson home. Marks love for nature certainly has shown in his landscape business, as well as his love for his family. May you remember him in the nature that surrounds you.

We were so heartbroken to hear of Mark’s passing. He was a quiet and gentle soul…so like his Father in his love for birds and nature. I loved Mark’s laugh…it always made me smile. I’m praying that you will be able to hold beautiful memories gathered over a life time, like a treasure that will bring you comfort in the days ahead. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

I want to express my deepest sympathies to Mark’s family.

Mark was an important person in my life during those formative high school years, and later sharing a place in Thorncliffe Park. Lots of laughs, a few cries, but always fun. Mark was a very talented guy, and I will always treasure the memories.

To this day I still tell people about this friend I had, with a special super power. I have never met anyone that could turn a phrase, or find a pun, like Mark. He could draw a pun out of any situation. He did it so many times, but darned if I can remember one of them. We would laugh and groan at the same time. I can only imagine how many times he has done this since.

He may have seemed quiet, but he always knew the pulse of the room. He would observe, and know what was going on, but would let things play out. When Mark did say something, it would be just a few words that spoke volumes.

A few years ago, at a high school event, we missed each other trying to connect. I wished I had tried harder.

Mark, I am thinking of you.

Though our lives went in different directions later in life I will never forget all the great times we had playing music together, living together in Toronto, our wrestling matches in the elevator, our road trips, late nights at the Comfortable Pew and all the other antics we shared. You will be missed.

My thoughts are with Mark’s entire family at this time.

It is so sad to hear of Marks passing. My condolences to Sherree and his wonderful family. Many many good times of friendship were experienced with Mark during high school and through the early years after college. Mark had so many friends and was a great guy. So many memories, Mark was truly good people. Peter Wong nailed it on what kind of guy he was. Memories of a crazy ski trip to Lake Placid and an even crazier visit when Mark came to hang out in Florida were the most recent…. and that was about 30 years ago. 🙂 So many fun times we all had. So sad that he is gone. May you rest in peace Mark. My prayers are with Sherree and Mark’s family. Tony Miller

Our friendship was always, from our first meeting in high school onwards .
Mark , my brother Bob and myself spent many a day together, whether be working together or socializing always being the great person he was .
Laughter was never far away when in Marks company.
Like most people that where fortunate to have Mark in your life , we all could go on for hours talking, writing about all the great memorable time spent together.
Truly a great friend to all and will never be forgotten.

    Beth & Sherree.
I remember spending some time with Mark & your Grampa, (I think his name was Mike) on the front porch of your house on Ferris Rd across the street from our house at 148.
My wife, Janet Sasaki, whom you may know from George Webster School, moved to Collingwood in 1975.
I would see your mom occasionally at the Shoe Tree in Meaford.
I never met Mark but being in the construction business, have seen some of his amazing work. I was quite surprised to hear of his passing at such a young age.
Our sincere condolences to all of you and your family.
