Hallahan, Mary Elizabeth 'Suze'

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mary “Suze” Hallahan (nee Abbotts), on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Errinrung Long Term Care in Thornbury in her 99th year.

Born in Thornbury on March 12, 1925, she was a daughter of the late  Joseph Abbotts and Isabelle Abbotts (nee Nixon).

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Joseph “Joe” Hallahan.

She was also predeceased by her siblings Clara Lackie, Russell, Clifford “Jake”, Alfred “Ted”, Harold “Skin”, Ken, Helyn McColman, Bessie Luker and Florence Tyndale.  She will be missed by many nieces and nephews and their families.

Mary was raised in Thornbury, later leaving to spend many years in Barrie with husband Joe, where she was a well-known employee of the IGA.  She and Joe enjoyed summer days on their houseboat.   Mary was an avid walker and could be regularly seen around Thornbury on her return to her hometown many years ago. She was a WWII Veteran, for which she received the War Medal 1939-45.  The family would like to thank Dr Naomi Klages and the staff at Errinrung for their care of Mary.

There will be no visitation or service at Mary’s request.

I was saddened to see that Mary has passed away. I have known her all my life, and she and Mom were good company for each other at Errinrung. And she was always a friendly face at St. Georges’ church as well as hard worker for St. Georges’. She had a sharp wit and a great sense of humour as well, and could make a person see the bright side in any situation. I still the remember the loud laughter drifting upstairs from the kitchen when I was a child and Mary was visiting Mom & Dad. Some memories are pure gold.
    Rest in peace Mary.

Mary will be sorely missed at Errinrung and around town. She was a friend to me and to many residents and staff at the home. Sending love and thoughts to all who are grieving her passing.

I first met Mary when I worked as a cashier at the end of high school at an IGA in Barrie. She became a good friend and mentor. After returning to Barrie to teach I would try to shop there and to keep in touch. After marrying and moving away, we lost contact. When my mother in law moved to Errinrung, Mary made her welcome and we were able to reconnect. Mary had a wonderful sense of humour and she and my husband would talk hockey and baseball. I had a visit with Mary in the spring and as usual she shook her head at my teasing about Chris. Neil. Mary was a special lady.
