Raeburn-Gibson, Mary Louise 'Lou'

June 9, 1936 – July 10, 2022
Mary-Louise Raeburn-Gibson (née Threndyle) passed away in Meaford, Ontario after enjoying the afternoon on the shores of Georgian Bay with members of her family including two of her great grandchildren.

She was predeceased in 1999 by her loving husband the Reverend Ian Alexander Raeburn-Gibson.  She is remembered with love by all her family – her sons Richard Raeburn-Gibson (Stephanie), Tim Raeburn-Gibson (Kimberley) and daughters Peggy Raeburn-Bell (Dean), and Susan Raeburn-Gibson (Abdelkader).

“Lou” as she was lovingly known to family and friends, adored her many grandchildren as well as their partners, Rylee (Charlotte), Savannah, Ian (Leanne), Taylor (Liene), Katya, Haven, Sydney (Gryphon), Rowan (Kelsey), Aicha (Eli), Nadia (Rob), Zacariah (Ashley).  She was especially proud to be a great grandmother to August, Louie and Owen.  Lou also loved and was loved by her extended family including brothers Ken and Doug, sisters Rose Marie and Shirleyan as well as many nieces and nephews in the Threndyle, Polzin, Walker and Doerr families.

Mary Louise was born in Hanover, Ontario and received her nursing qualifications at the Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in London, Ontario.  Following their marriage in 1957, Ian joined the Canadian Air Force as a Chaplain and the family was subsequently posted in Winnipeg, Germany, Vancouver Island and Kingston. Lou and Ian moved to Meaford in 1981 when Ian became the Minister at Knox Presbyterian Church.  Lou was an Elder at this church, a devoted member over the past 40 years and made many close friends in the church and broader Meaford community.

Mary-Lou lived an amazing, joyful and blessed life!  She loved spending time with her many friends and large family.  She swam in Georgian Bay every summer, skied the local trails every winter, and enjoyed family cycling adventures.  She loved to travel and even in recent years hiked in Iceland, the east coast and the American southwest.  We were all so fortunate to have been able to laugh with her, know her love, learn from her wisdom, and be inspired by her grace, humility, and example of a life well lived.  We love and miss you.

A celebration of Mary Lou’s life will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford on Thursday, July 14, 2022, family will receive friends for visiting at 12:30 p.m. and the service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Presbyterian World Service & Development, and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Raeburn-Gibson family. Lou was a very special lady. She was so kind and caring, always a special smile. I sang with her in the vocal choir and played bells in our handbell choir. She was a big part of these choirs as well as the church itself. I’m going to miss her. Sincere condolences to the family.

To the wonderful Raeburn Gibson family,
Lou was such a wonderful person, positive, loving and friendly. Lou was a sweet person. Lou loved her family and you all loved her. I was showing Teal, Lou’s house and how she lived across from you Peggy. She asked if I’d like to live across the street from her. I told her that I’d love that and she said she’d love it too. It was special that you Peggy and family lived so close to her, you were good to her and Lou was good to you. So many wonderful memories of Lou for all the generations …

Lou was such a sweet, kind lady who’s love of life was evident through her bright smile! In my eyes, Lou epitomized Christianity, through her strong belief system, her patience, graciousness and love toward all. I will miss our chats at bell choir, which most often included exchanging updates on both of our families. It was evident that her kids, grandkids and great grandkids gave her so much joy in life! Peggy, Dean and the entire family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

“What a woman”. I said that about Lou every time she drove past me in her Nissan Juke (too many times to count), and every time I saw her walking Ruby (way too many times to count). Lovely, gentle, sweet and humble. What a woman. My heart is with you all.

All of the Raeburn – Gibson family have our deepest sympathy. We were shocked to hear about Lou’s passing yesterday as all of you must have been. Have known her since she and Ian had come to Knox , Meaford in ’81. She was the epitome of a Christian as the above messages have stated – humble, kind, loving, and interested in each person with whom she encountered. Just talked to her recently at another Celebration of Life. You have much to celebrate in Lou’s life.
