Grant, Patricia 'Pat' (nee Alexander)

It is with heavy hearts and gratitude for her life, the Grant family announces that Patricia ‘Pat’ Grant passed away peacefully surrounded by her children at the Meaford Hospital on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at the age of 85.

She was the much loved mother of Tim Grant of Meaford, Ellen Grant (Orran Krieger) of Boston, Cam Grant (Margie Regan) of Newmarket; and very special ‘Granny’ of John, Beth, Joel, Maya, Isaac and Kaela.

Pat is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Charles ‘Chuck/Charlie’ Grant and her brothers Robert ‘Bob’ and James ‘Jim’ Alexander.

Pat was a longtime resident of the Meaford, Thornbury and Collingwood area.

She enjoyed a long career first as an English teacher and then as a guidance counsellor/guidance department head at Collingwood High School. She cared deeply about the teenagers she counselled and kept in touch with many. She was passionate about the rights of the under-represented and promoting peace. She loved the outdoors and hiked the entire Bruce Trail. Most of all, she treasured time with family and making tarts at Christmas.

A celebration of Pat’s life will be conducted at Grace United Church in Thornbury on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 11 o’clock.

Mrs Grants influence changed the course of my life. She encouraged me and reassured me when I felt I could not do it on my own. I went back to her when I graduated university and she was excited as I was. I am grateful for her life. I lost touch with her but glad she continued to enjoy her life with challenges she loved with family at her side. Rest In Peace Mrs. Grant and thank you. ❤️

Sometimes we get lucky enough to have someone pop into our life who actually saves our life. Not only saves it but helps us become a better person. Helps us find ourselves. Sees us when nobody else really does. Accepts us when all kinds of people don’t, or who criticize or other us because they don’t get it. Doesn’t need explanations to understand a reality that isn’t theirs to accept us. To Love us.

For me, one of the most important people that came into my life was Patricia Alexander Grant. I am so grateful that she came in to this world and I know I am far from the only person she saved from various challenging life experiences that could crush us. Of course she would never say she saved us, she’d say that we saved ourselves. But man, did she help us in that extraordinary and almost impossible task.

May that I can be just a small measure of such a woman. My only regret is having been so out of touch in recent years because of my brain injury. She deserved better. But I’m grateful for the many many years of adult friendship and travelling each other’s path. So much more than a friend, so much more than my godmother, as someone said to me she was my soul mother. I give such thanks for the gift of her life.

So go well into the Light, Patricia. The Light that you so beautiful shone. And shared. My deepest condolences to Tim, Cam, Ellen, and their kids, and the all those that loved her.

So sorry to hear! As Jane said above, Pat, Mrs Grant, was the best! She was an awesome guidance counsellor and helped so many of us to find our paths in life. So thankful! It reminds me that in education, as so much else in life , one doesn’t always know the good effects of one’s actions, but they go out like little ripples, and they change the world! Sending love and strength for her journey, and love and peace to her family. Sue Brown

When I learned about Pat’s life after meeting her and Charlie during a river cruise in Europe, it was like I was following in her foot steps although our paths had not crossed until later in our lives. We both were born and raised in Owen Sound, both went to Knox United Church where we sang in the choirs, both were students at the University of Toronto at Victoria College where we lived in residence and studied Modern Languages. It became uncanny as I almost hesitated to tell her about my life in case she had done it, too. What a wonderful, pleasant person she was. While we were staying at our timeshare in Thornbury, so many dinners with her and Tim were full of thought provoking conversations. Those shoes that made the foot steps were certainly hard to fill! We will miss her greatly.
