Shenstone, Richard William

November 7, 1952 - March 1, 2023

Richard William Shenstone of Meaford passed away Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at Grey Bruce Health Services in Meaford in his 71st year.

Born in Toronto, he was a son of Peter and Mary (Legate) Shenstone.

Richard will be remembered fondly by his brothers John, David and Anne Shenstone and his nieces, nephews and their families.

Rick was a private person with a kind heart and a truly gentle soul. He loved dogs and his nieces and nephews. He loved giving to and getting gifts from his family, and with his wicked and sometimes quirky sense of humour his accompanying cards were killer. Uncle Rick was also the king of Tic Tac’s, which he loved to share with all.

Rick loved camping on Manitoulin as well as the town of Wiarton, both of these areas paired well with his love of photography, thoroughly enjoying sharing his work, as well as sausages and fresh fish picked up locally, with his family.

He loved gardening, his BBQ, and cars. The latter being a strong passion of his. He was an ultra-organized fellow who loved routine, his time pieces, and those who were familiar to him in the community. He will be sorely missed.

I met Rick and his mom when they came into Meaford Interiors to buy window coverings. He was so very kind and witty. I never forgot him.

Fond memories of Rick polishing his
sporty automobiles down by pool at
“ The Martins”. So glad that in recent
years we made a point of keeping in
touch , once in a while , to reflect on
family life , en masse, up at the cottage.
      Drive on , Rick ….

Good memories Rick. Glad we were able to visit a couple times in the Beaver Valley in recent years. Good times together years ago at the barn having a few beers out of the Lil Oscar cooler and checking on the Challenger and the Skidoo Blizzard before enjoying a few TicTacs and heading back to the farmhouse to join the others.

To be frank, I loved Rick like a little brother. I think I was perceived as a bad influence on him by his family, but we spent a summer repainting houses on the Owen Sound family compound while Mainline albums blasted as we worked. I recall Rick’s dad, who paid us by the hour, asked why we had so many hours logged.Legit ask. Our process was to totally strip old finishes and repaint with 3 coats. Years after that beef, Rick’s dad actually thanked us for the quality of our efforts, realising that he got good value from us both. Rick taught me about the Esplanade roller skate arena and what Dave Wipper called “bowling”… an activity that required a flame and a pipe. I might have been the cause of Rick buying a Rolex Daytona, as I then wore a Rolex Submariner as a certified scuba diver. I bet his Daytona is worth more than any of the hot cars he coveted over the years. Love you Rick. We had fun and Johnson beat us both to the grave at what ? 22 years old ?

My parents were close family friends of the Shenstone’s. I recall summers in the 1960’s Owen sound and occasional weekends in King City with Rick while working with his Dad at Shenstone Forest Products. Were are both the same age. We drifted apart once I moved to Hawaii in 1971. During Covid, I looked for my old friend on the internet and I found nothing, just today I found this sad news. I would happy to hear from his younger brothers about his life.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Rick’s passing. We kept in touch on and off but I have to say the past couple of years I had my own health struggles and was delinquent in sending my usual Christmas card December 2023. Over the following months I was wondering if he was okay and did send a card or two but nothing back. This past Saturday while driving in my car, no it is not a Challenger, all of a sudden I thought to my self ‘Oh no! I hope I am wrong!’ and I googled his name and found he had passed on. Rick and I had known each other since we were 17 years old in Toronto and at The Martins. Kathy and Dave were dear friends of my parents and that’s how we came to know each other. Rick was such a kind, gentle man with a huge heart and I am so grateful to have known him and shared some really fun times together. Good Bye Dear Friend, I miss you so much!
