Wilson (nee Smart), Roberta Ione

“A Jewel”

“And the Lord, He it is that doth go before thee; He will be with thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”

Born in Euphrasia Township on November 12, 1929, Ione was the daughter of the late Clarence and Lillian (nee Prentice) Smart.  Ione passed away peacefully at her home on January 30, 2021.

She grew up on the farm behind Old Baldy spending her spare time on the rock cliff reading books.

She graduated Grade 13 in 1947 from the Thornbury School and began teaching at the Rosedale School near Markdale.

In 1949 she married Ian Wesley Wilson of Kimberley and left teaching to be a full time wife and mother.   Ione was predeceased by her adored husband in January 17, 1969.  She will be remembered as the loved mother of Corrie and his wife Patricia, Murray and his friend Susan Merriam, Sherril and her husband Ron Harwood, Yvonne and her partner Terry Nakeff, Ruth, Lindsay and his partner Darlene Kamrath.

She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Kathleen Wilson (Dale) and her son-in-law Gary Formanek. She will also be fondly remembered by Colleen Dunn and Lyle McConnell.

Ione was a dear sister to Calvin and his wife May, Marylin (late David Dinsmore), Karen Crouse and her husband David, and sister-in-law Vera Smart. She was predeceased by her brother Merle, sister Helen Redhead and brother Franklin.

“Nana” –  A Nana’s there when mom can’t be to lend a helping hand.   Giving life that extra special touch that only Nana’s can.  So God invented a Nana and we’re so glad it’s you!

She was the loved Nana to her 14 Grandchildren: Tammy, Bobbi Jo, Angela, Eldon, Matthew, Anita, Wesley, Peter, Sonya, Eric, Tara, Troy, Cassondra and Victoria.   Her 12 Great Grandchildren: Benjamin, Emily, Taylor, Haydyn, Michaela, Mackenzie, Josh, Jack, Gary, Luke, Claire and William and her Great Great Grandchild Connor.

Many thanks to Dr. Ashley Colter, Care Partner Nurses and PSW’s for their excellent care.

Our condolences on the passing of Ione. We thought very highly of Ione as a neighbour and a loyal supporter of her community and the Kimberley community Association. She was always happy and willing to help out at any of our events. Missed seeing her at Thursday morning coffee at the hall when it was hard for her to get out.

What I will always remember about Ione is her constant smile. She was a kind, gentle soul and was always prepared to help in the Kimberley community when asked. We relied on her help for many years at the Kimberley Library’s annual fundraiser every Spring. Thank you Ione and sleep in peace.

My sincere sympathies to you all – Corrie, Murray, Sherry, Yvonne, Ruth and Lindsay and your families. Auntie Ione and you guys played a big part in my childhood memories. We had many fun times, big family gatherings and great food at your house. I remember playing with baby chicks, gathering eggs, boiling down maple syrup and being chased by the gander, to mention a few. Thinking of you all with love and a heavy heart these days – praying you will find comfort in each other and your shared memories.
