Cundy, Ronald James

February 26, 1931 - March 8, 2024

‘Death is at once
The end of the body’s old journey
And the beginning of the soul’s new journey.’
– Sri Chinmoy

Ron left his well-worn body on Friday, March 8th, 2024 in Owen Sound Hospital. He just finished celebrating his 93rd birthday and was so pleased to see old friends and enjoy a great family get-together.

Ron was the loving husband of Shirley (Sandbacka) Cundy for 69 years and leaves his children Linda Wykes (Brian); Ron Cundy Jr. (Kirsten); Deb Cundy; Bonnie Hammond (Thom) and Lisa Cundy; grandchildren Kari Vink (Darcy), Matthew Cundy, Katy Hammond, Scott Hammond (Emma) and 4 great grandchildren Isaac, Ellie, Teddy and Elaine. He is also survived by his brother Ted, and predeceased by his mother Carrie Cundy, father William Cundy; brother William and sister Margaret.

Ron and Shirley moved to Redwing in 1959 and purchased the local post office and general store. He brought a small printing press with him and in the first year of being in the area they produced the voters list for Collingwood Township. He did many types of jobs when first arriving including working at Teledyne, but eventually chose printing as his profession and in the late 70’s he published the Valley Courier Newspaper. In the 80’s he sold to the owner of the Review Herald and the paper continued as the Courier-Herald until it closed. Ron carried on with the printing business until his retirement.

Ron loved meeting new people. Always with a friendly smile, and an unlimited amount of witty remarks. Gardening was a passion for him over the years and he loved his greenhouse where he would grow beautiful geraniums over the winter for spring planting. Even though he is no longer with us, we remember how he lived his life with passion, curiosity, and a great love for his family. We are extremely thankful and will never forget.

Goodbye Ron. I remember when you came to Redwing and had the rink out back of the store where we played hockey and everyone could skate. Great times and you will be missed and remembered.

    Sincere condolences to Ron’s family.
He was a great guy to work with at JMG, he did his best to improve my English as a new immigrant from Holland. Not too long ago, I visited him in Redwing and found him as friendly spontaneous and as passionate as ever.

As always, the passing of someone who we love and cherish, is always a difficult thing to adjust to.
What makes it a little bit easier is when you know that a full life was lived and that the legacy and the people that he has touched along the way are better for having met and been around him.

    Much love being sent

Jon Cundy and family including brother Ted Cundy.

With heartfelt sympathy, I miss my friend Ron. Our chats about world affairs and politics while sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee and playing checkers will not be forgotten. Our conversation usually ended with talk about food. I learned a lot from Ron.
I wish that I had known him longer. A true gentleman who I am proud to say became my friend.
Kris and I are sending our condolences to the entire Cundy Family. Ron’s new journey has begun, but his old journey will always be in our hearts.

I consider myself very lucky to have met and spent time with Ron . He was one of those really special people who made everyone he met feel important and comfy immediately. If you were a new person entering into the Cundy’s house (as I was years ago) he would take you on a tour tell you fabulous stories, ALWAYS make you laugh and you’d get to leave with something, maybe a geranium, aloe or spider plant from his greenhouse that he grew. He knew how to make people feel special….it was a great gift of his. Just this past summer we had a bonfire in their back yard and his instinct was, hey we are going to have fun let’s invite everybody!!:) so he instructed me to drive my car so we could go tell the whole neighbourhood to come on over. This memory makes me smile because he was just so inclusive and truly wanted to share anything he had. He did a good job at this life, he loved his family, worked hard at about a million different jobs, took care of people, left everyone with a smile, was generous, took pride in his home and yard…. he was simply wonderful someone to admire. I will miss his big smile, hearing his stories, and most of all hugs. Sending my love to the family and all who loved him

Ron Cundy is a one of a kind guy. He was always smiling offering to make you French fries, give you one of his beautiful geraniums or special pack of sauce for chicken. He was never short on stories and conversation. He loved his family and took so much pride in taking care of them, his gardens, plants and friends. A sweet loving compassionate husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered. RIP Mr. Cundy xo

Thank you to everyone for your kind words about our Dad. We were very fortunate to have him for so long and that his health was good for so many years. When we look back on all the projects he accomplished over the years it goes to show his strength of character, persistence and entrepreneurship. Wishing everyone the best in their own path of life.
