Hammond, Shawn Edward

June 27, 1971 – June 26, 2022
‘Only the good die young.’
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the unexpected passing of Shawn Hammond, love of her life, husband & best friend of Meghan Johnson.

Married on May 17, 2003, they met the old-fashioned way…through a dating service.  They clicked right from day one and formed an instant friendship that grew quickly.  They would have done anything for each other and supported each other in all that they wanted to do.  A true genuine love and adoration of each other was easy to see.

Shawn was only a year into an early retirement that he was fully ready to enjoy. He and Meghan sold their house in Mississauga and moved to the home they purchased 8 years prior in Meaford, Ontario. They loved being in a small town near walking trails the harbour and to be able to go out kayaking on Georgian Bay. Shawn even picked up a paper route delivering the Grey-Bruce This Week and The Owen Sound Sun Times locally. He figured he went for a walk every day anyways, why not be paid for it?

Shawn will be greatly missed by his wife Meghan and their two fur kids, Cocoa and Rosie. Always loved and remembered by them as well as Mother-in-Law Mary (late Lorne), and Paddy & Derek. Sister-in-law Bree and her husband Krystian with nephew Mateo and niece Gabby. Brother-in-law Dan. Sister-in-law Necole (Jeremy, Darwin, Shianne). Shawn was predeceased by his parents Faye & Ed who were always very proud of everything he did.

The many Aunts, Uncles & Cousins and extended family, friends and coworkers will all miss him, especially a group of ‘brothers’ who called themselves The Four Horsemen. Shawn was fond of everyone in his life, even though the last couple of years restricted some potential get togethers.

A very inquisitive and curious person by nature, Shawn always had lots of questions on many topics. A tenacious reader and knowledge gatherer, he frequented the Streetsville Library and the Meaford Library often. He had an extensive knowledge of Music and Movies and a very eclectic taste in both. His wife didn’t always enjoy playing Trivial Pursuit with him due to this fact! Shawn was especially passionate about health and nutrition, having earned a diploma from the Natural School of Nutrition as a mature student. He was always wanting to further that knowledge and help others improve their health as well. Shawn was vegan and originally it wasn’t for the animals, but it grew to that over time with having Cocoa & Rosie in his life. Although he would enjoy some salmon cooked on the BBQ by his wife occasionally.

He started working in Hotel and Restaurant Management and held a manager position with McDonald’s for a short time before realizing that both Management and Customer Service were not for him. He worked with his dad at Domtar then landed a position with Reid Milling in Streetsville which changed hands over the years and eventually became Ardent Mills, where he retired from.  He was never one to shy away from overtime hours.

Shawn loved going to concerts and has seen various artists over his years. He even bought a guitar in the hopes to maybe learn to play a tune or two one day. Shawn had a great fondness for skulls and anything related to skulls … artwork, rings, t-shirts, you name it!  The travel bug didn’t bite him too much however he did visit some places with Meghan during their years together that they both had very fond memories of. Met a few celebrities along the way and he did appear on a local news program in Cleveland at the Hard Rock Cafe when visiting for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. His picture will forever be located at Meaford Harbour in a snap that Meghan took of him sitting on the rocks below the lighthouse.

Many thanks to the first responders who helped in any way they could for Shawn.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Shawn’s life will take place at the Meaford Harbour Pavilion on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 1 until 4 p.m.

Shawn – you were one of a kind, in the best possible way. You will be greatly missed by so many people who were lucky enough to know you. It saddens me greatly that your retirement together was so short – there was so much more for you to learn and accomplish.

My heart breaks for Meghan, not only losing her life partner but her best friend as well. It’ll be hard for life to go on … but go on it will, with many wonderful memories of a loving marriage and strong bond of friendship.

    Rock on, Shawn!

I’m still in shock and deeply saddened of the sudden loss of my longtime, dear friend. We had such good memories from our McDonald’s days. Although we lost touch over the years, as people do, you never stopped sending me kind words from time to time and I’m glad we got to chat. My thoughts are with your family and longtime partner Meghan. I’m happy to hear you had found the love we all search for. Happy to have known you and thanks for all the memories. I love you and keep rockin out.

There are not enough words for me to fully express how much we have all lost in Shawn’s passing. I only can hope that he knows how much he touched so many of our lives. To see the love between him and Meghan was to be a witness to pure and true love. Shawn was there to help me through a very difficult time in my life, and I probably never thanked him enough for that! RIP Shawn Hammond, you deserve eternal peace. “Only the good die young”
