Smart, Sheila Marie

Sheila Marie (nee Osborne) Smart passed away peacefully on Saturday April 5, 2025, at Chapman House with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 59.

Sheila was born on March 4, 1966, in Kincardine Hospital to the late Robert and Muriel (Scott) Osborne of Ripley. She was the beloved wife of Garry Smart of Meaford for 28 years. She was a loving sister of Joyce Osborne of Ripley, Joan Vincent (Neil) of Wingham, and Kevin Osborne of Ripley. She was a treasured aunt of Margaret Vincent (Gerald Fess) of Hanover and the late Shannon Vincent. She was a cherished niece of Doug Wrightson of Port Elgin, Norma Hartwick of Ripley, and Ray and Liz Pennington of Teeswater. She was predeceased by Garry’s parents, Raymond and Kathleen (Wyville) Smart and will be greatly missed by Ina Alexander, and George and Pauline Wyville of Meaford as well as many cousins and extended family.

Sheila grew up in Ripley. She attended Ripley-Huron Central Public School, Ripley District School and Kincardine and District Secondary School. She was a class of 1989 graduate from University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Agriculture Business. She worked with Royal Bank of Canada in Exeter, Elmira, Hanover and Owen Sound followed by time with the Cooperators Insurance in Meaford. She was thrilled to be working at her dream job of working from home with Libro Credit Union. Over the years Sheila volunteered faithfully with many agricultural organizations. She was a 4-H leader, president and secretary-treasurer of the Ontario Limousin Association, Meaford and St. Vincent Agricultural Society director, a member of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, and a Grown in Grey committee member.

Thanks to Dr. Allan, Dr. Aboo and the oncology staff at Brightshores Health System and Royal Victoria Hospital, the Meaford Hospital staff and Chapman House staff and volunteers.

Cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place Thursday April 10, 2025. Family and friends are welcome to gather for a casual celebration of Sheila’s life at the Meaford Community Centre on Saturday April 12, 2025, from 1 until 4 p.m. with tributes at 2 o’clock.

We are so sorry for your loss Garry.
Sheila was such a pleasant person and enjoyable to be around. Through both church activities and fair activities, we had great chats and she was always willing to help however she could.
A wonderful memory of Sheila is the retirement party she organized when my brother Bill retired from the Royal Bank where he and Sheila worked together. Sheila went to a lot of work, and with the accolades towards my brother, I wondered if we were at the wrong party – just kidding. We knew she would put her complete best into the event, because that is how Sheila lived her life.
Knowing her, well enough, Sheila was one of those people who made life better for those around her –
    a true blessing to all.
Our sincere condolences to all who cherished Sheila.
    Sincerely,
    Verna & Rick

    Garry and family,
Getting in touch with Sheila a couple of years ago was a great thing for me. It was so fun reminiscing about our years in Ripley. Thanks to Sheila a group of friends who went to school together from Kindergarten to grade 12 or 13 were able to meet last summer after decades apart. I was so grateful to her for setting that up! We were able to pick up right where we left off and it’s one of my fondest memories from last summer. I was grateful to see where you lived and spend a few hours with Sheila in February. She was one of the kindest people I knew and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Then growing up, we’d see you both at Fairs in Owen Sound, Meaford and Rocklyn, always volunteering and doing whatever needed to be done. I was blessed to have Sheila join our team a number of years ago when we needed someone with a background and “love” for Agricultural business. It did not take long for clients to build a relationship of trust with Sheila. Very grateful for the support you provided her during those years. Many farm clients benefited from her calm, and caring spirit; full of knowledge and competence.

Even on a bad day, Sheila was always thinking of others…How is your mom & dad doing? She would comment.. bring your dad over to see our new barn..

Lots of memories! May they bless you going forward and keep a smile on your face.
