Jackman, Shirley Ernestine

December 19, 1930 - March 16, 2025

Shirley Jackman, formerly of Thornbury and Meaford, passed away on March 16, 2025 at the age of 94.

Shirley was born on December 19, 1930 to Ernest and Myrtle Foster in Collingwood Ontario.  She grew up in Thornbury, with several brothers and sisters (Kenneth, Melvern, Delbert, Marvin, Aggie, Arlene, Lorna), all of whom predeceased her.

Shirley and Terence Grant Jackman were married on February 20 1954. Shirley and Terry enjoyed many family vacations in Algonquin Park, where Shirley became a local celebrity with her fishing skills, frequently “outfishing” other anglers. They continued to enjoy speckled trout fishing locally throughout the years. Terry predeceased her on December 20, 2016.

Following her high school graduation, Shirley began working in the local apple orchards, followed by a time with the Bell Telephone Company in Thornbury as an operator.

Her passion for flowers and talent for floral design motivated her to establish Thornbury Florists in the 1970s in partnership with her sister Lorna.

Shirley is survived by her four children Terry Jr. (Maxine), Denise, Lori (Bill) and Tracy (Jeff ), as well as six grandchildren (Lindsay, Leslie, Kathy, William, Taylor and Jordon) and twelve great grandchildren, all of whom will cherish fond and lasting memories of her.

Family will honour Shirley’s passing with a private remembrance gathering. Interment will follow at Thornbury Clarksburg Union Cemetery.

Terry, Denise, Lori, Tracy and your families, I am so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. I have so many fond memories of the Jackman house and hanging out at the flower shop with Tracy. We’d get into some shananigans and I can still see Shirley shaking her head! I still have a beautiful sweater that Shirley once knit me. Incredibly talented lady. She will be missed.

My sympathies to the Jackman family. I have many fond memories of all of you. We shared many good times in our younger days at the bowling alley. Your mom was always fun. Going to the flower shop was an adventure as Shirley and Lorna were quite the characters. How lucky we were to have known your mom, your matriarch. Hold your memories close and may you live to make her proud as she watches over you.
