Christmann, Thomson Arthur 'Thom'
On the afternoon of August 27, Thom passed on peacefully at Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood, with his loved ones by his side. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.
Thom was born in Hanover and raised in Chesley, by his parents Mel, a mechanic and Betty, a school teacher. He was the oldest of three children, brother Bill (deceased) and sister Anne Doughty (Peterborough). He was always proud of one of his first jobs, working at Brown’s Bakery in Chesley run by the Buchanan’s.
Thom met his wife to be, Doreen Patterson, at a youth group in Chesley. They fell in love and were married on December 19, 1964. After a stint living in Owen sound, they eventually settled in Meaford where they put down roots.
Thom was the proud father of two sons, Thom Jr (Michelle) and Tim (Jessica). He always made time for the boys, be it wrestling on the carpet or shuttling them to and from various sporting events over the years. To Thom, hard work and the effort you put in was more important than the outcome. He also always emphasized treating people right. He did his best to instill these principles in his boys.
He also loved and was proud of his four grandchildren. Thom’s kids, Jack (Milo) and Dom. And Tim‘s kids, Ben (Kaylie) and Chloe.
Thom and Doreen had a wonderful life together raising their children, camping all over Ontario and beyond and enjoying time together with friends. Thom‘s heart was broken when Doreen passed away in 2001.
Later Thom came together with Carol Ann Ferguson and they made a wonderful family life together. They enjoyed traveling, hiking, and their time during the summer at Sauble Beach. Through their relationship, Thom also developed a bond with Carol Ann’s daughter, Alanna.
Thom began his professional career as a butcher. And then eventually became a meat inspector for the Government of Ontario. There he spent over 25 years. His job as an inspector took him to meat processing plants around southwestern Ontario.
After he retired from the government, he spent a few years doing yard care which was always a passion of his whether he was doing it for others or at his own house.
Thom was a truly good human being who lived a simple and very principled life. He always nurtured a community of friends and loved to joke with them. His quick wit is one of the things that friends and family will remember most about him.
He had a lifelong passion for sports whether that was following the kids in their sporting endeavors, watching on TV, or going to Owen Sound Attack games. Perhaps his biggest sporting passion was standardbred horse racing. He owned and trained a horse of his own at one point, and then later was part owner of various horses which allowed him to go the races and track their progress. His passion for the horses extended right up to the final months of his life when he would often get online to check how the horses in his ownership group had done the night before.
A special thanks goes out to the healthcare workers at Chartwell’s Georgian Traditions, Collingwood General & Marine Hospital and Campbell House Hospice, who treated him with empathy and compassion.
A service in celebration of Thom’s life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford, on Monday, September 21, 2026 at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the church hall. A private interment will occur at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford, ON.

Thom, Tim, Carol Ann and families. My deepest sympathy. Thom was a wonderful Brother in Law. My husband Harry and I lived on 11th Street east Owen Sound in a downstairs apartment and Doreen and Thom lived upstairs. Had a lot of good times there. Went to many dances with them. I knew Tom from the time I baby sat the 2 boys. Talking to him when my husband had cancer and his wife with cancer. Always asked how life was treating me when I saw him on the street. valued those chinwags. All the the best to the lives he shared so near to him. He will be missed.
