Burstein Muelder, Ulla

October 16, 1932 – February 7, 2026

Ulla was born in Kråkshult, Småland, Sweden, and died peacefully in Grey County, Ontario, Canada on February 7, 2026.

Ulla was known for her independence, style, and fierce devotion to her family. She was complex, strong-willed, and deeply creative.

Born in southern Sweden, Ulla moved to Stockholm as a young woman to begin her adult life and attend art school. In 1957, she married David Burstein, and together they had two daughters, Susanne and Nathalie. Ulla and David were pioneers in Scandinavian fashion, co-founding Sweden’s first French women’s fashion label and boutique.

After David’s death in 1970, Ulla moved to Canada, living in Toronto, and later London, UK. She moved easily across borders and cultures, becoming a true citizen of the world. Her homes in Stockholm, Toronto, London, North Palm Beach, and Clarksburg reflected her artistic eye and deep love of beauty, and she later channeled this passion into real estate in both Toronto and London.

In 1995, Ulla married Jan Muelder. They settled in North Palm Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather, and entertained friends and family. Ulla had an art studio there, where she continued to paint; she loved art and was a talented painter throughout her life.

Ulla found joy in books, flowers, swimming, forests, lakes and beaches, travel, and, most of all, in her four grandchildren. She had a gift for creating beautiful, welcoming homes and for bringing people together, and she was a generous and joyful host.

She was a devoted and involved grandmother to Anatole, Zacharie (Marsha), Maya, and Stella, and a cherished great-grandmother to Mila and Matisse.

A Celebration of Life will take place in Stockholm on the afternoon of July 9, 2026.

A summer gathering for Ulla’s Canadian family and friends will be held in May/June 2026.

    Dear Nathalie and family,

I was so deeply saddened to hear about your mum. Ulla touched my life in such a special way. She had a beautiful way of making those around her feel valued and loved — and I felt that love from her. I will forever cherish the time we shared. It was an honour to care for her, to laugh with her, and to witness her strength and grace.

Please know I am holding you in my thoughts during this very difficult time.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ulla last year, and we shared a wonderful dinner together in Clarksburg. I still can’t believe she is no longer with us. She was such a kind, warm, and lovely person. My heart goes out especially to her daughter, Nathalie, and to all of Ulla’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

While this loss is deeply painful, I find comfort in believing she is now in a better place. She will be truly missed.

Nathalie, Maya, Stella, Suzanne, Anatole, Zach and family,
What a privilege to have known Ulla! She was a beautiful, elegant, strong, resilient, creative woman. She took family seriously, and graciously included us in ways we will never forget – especially as a young couple alone in London years ago. We are sorry for your loss, and wish you peace as you gather to share stories and memories in the coming days and months.
    Lots of Love,
    Sylvia and Brad

    Dear Nathalie and Susanne and the rest of your clan;
Ulla was my friend. I think of her often and have years of memories I cherish – from Dunloe to Prince of Whales drive and beyond. Ulla was like a second mother to me, I respected her and she taught me a lot. I loved Ulla very much and I will miss her. I am sending you love and strength and hugs and humour, I know you’ll get through this sad time with the dignity and elegance your mother exemplified. Love always Sonja

    Dear Susanne and Nathalie,

We are so sad to hear about Ulla’s passing. Ulla brought style into every room, grace into every conversation, and just enough wit to keep everyone on their toes. It was a true privilege to know her and hear her stories and witness her unmistakable sparkle.

Sending you and your families love and hugs.
