Shaw, Winifred Muriel 'Win'

Winifred ‘Win’ Shaw passed away peacefully at the Meaford Hospital with family by her side on Friday, April 2, 2021 at the grand age of 97.

Born in Carroll’s Crossing, New Brunswick on November 7, 1923, Winifred was a daughter of the late Baden and Irene (nee Carroll) O’Donnell.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband George Shaw in 2011.

Winifred was the much loved mother of Jim Shaw and his wife Janice of North York and Maureen Bell (late Dennis) of Thornbury. She was the proud ‘Nana’ and  ‘G.G.’ of  Carey Arseneau (Kevin) and their daughters Madeleine and Gabrielle, Mike Shaw (Ashley) and their children Tamsin and Cameron, Jason Bell (Bobi) and their children Noah, Lukas and Rylin, and Jennifer Jones (Grant) and their children Hayden, Dylan and Grayson.

Winifred moved to Meaford from New Brunswick with her husband George in 1945 at the end of the war and spent the next 76 years developing a multitude of life long friendships.  She had immense pride and a deep love for her family and community of friends and neighbours. An active member of Christ Church Anglican, she was truly an example of her faith to all of her friends and family.  Working at the Meaford Hospital for many years she had fond memories of the close friendships she made that endured long after her retirement.  Winifred was a strong person who believed there was good in everyone and lived every day finding ways to make a difference in the lives of others.  We have all been richly blessed for having Winifred in our lives and will always carry our memories of her close to our hearts.

This is her prayer and wish for us all: ‘I said a prayer for you today and know God must have heard.  I felt the answer in my heart although He spoke no word.  I didn’t ask for wealth or fame (I knew you wouldn’t mind.)  I asked Him to send treasures of a far more lasting kind!  I asked that He be near you at the start of each new day; to grant you health and blessings and friends to share your way.  I asked for happiness for you in all things great and small.  But it was for His loving care I prayed the most of all!’ Trinity Missions

A service celebrating Winifred’s life will be conducted in the near future when it is safe for family and friends to gather.

    To Maureen, Jim and families
Your Mom was the best. I worked with her over 50 years ago and I always admired her, first of all, for how attractive she was and also what a wonderful warm heart she had for those that she worked with and those that she dealt with everyday. Following that work relationship, Win and I shared our faith relationship and she truly was a beautiful woman of God with a tremendous love for her Lord and Saviour

We first met Win 23 years ago when we moved to Meaford. She wore a bright red jacket and pearls and I thought she was a beautiful woman. Over the years she was a great fan and encouragement to my husband Tom on his work. On behalf of Tom and myself I pray for a happy homecoming for Win with all those she had “loved long since and lost awhile.”

Maureen there are no words to express the sadness felt in loosing such a wonderful mother and friend. Your mom was a treasure and a gift to all that met her. When you think of her do it with a smile. I only met your mom a few times but each time I walked away with a smile on my face and the thought that I had just spent time with someone very special. Thinking of you as always.

Your Mother was truly one of my best friends. From the time she helped me get a job at the Meaford Hospital until now she was so kind and thoughtful in all she did and said. We had so many good times going out to retirement and coffee parties, etc. I will sure miss picking her up to go someplace and having many good laughs . The Lord has certainly welcomed home this beloved woman and may we meet again.

Maureen and all the family of Winnifred: We are neighbours of Winnifred’s parents and brother, Baden O’D, I remember the first time we met her when her and George were home, she was such a pretty lady and was so warm and friendly, she left you with a good feeling, as she made you feel so welcome, when our son went through Basic Training in the Military, she was so good to him, a great encouragement and helpmate when things were going tough. She will live on in the hearts of all that came to know and love her so much. She is united with George now (they loved each other so much) RIP Winnifred, Good and Faithful servant, your work on earth is done, but know you will continue in your heavenly home
