Harbottle, Hazel Etta
The Harbottle Family share news of the peaceful passing of their precious Mom and Grami, Hazel Harbottle (Parkes) on March 29th, 2024.
Hazel was mom of four children, Dianne, Dale, Deborah, and Dean.
She was also Grami to nine and Great Grami to four: the late Jason, Garrett and his son Jaxsyn, Sarah and her son Benson, Keila Roesner (Ben) and their children Eileen and Elwood, Callie McCullough, Madelene, Hillary, Scott, and Grant Harbottle.
With family by her side, Hazel left this world to reunite with her beloved husband Elwood, tiny daughter Dianne, first grandchild Jason, and adored daughter-in-law Sharon in Heaven.
Born to Jack and Alice Parkes on July 18, 1934, and raised in Collingwood, Hazel is eldest sister to Gord (Pat) Bill, Kenny, Harvey (Terri) Donnie (Louise), Shirley (Fred) and Elenor. William and Laura Harbottle, Leslie (Muriel), Bernice Bell (Bruce), Verna Sheridan (Reg), Marie Armstrong (Lorne), and Donna Lekx (Fred) welcomed her into the Harbottle family. She was a much -loved aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was an independent businesswoman operating her own hair-dressing shop, Hazel’s Beauty Salon, in Thornbury, where she shared many years and memories with the community, often working late nights and early mornings to squeeze in any last-minute appointments, never turning anyone away.
Personable and cheerful, Hazel welcomed everyone she met with a smile, and was a trusted confidante, always encouraging, supportive and wise. Loving wife to Elwood Harbottle, she often shared the story of the day he taught her how to drive when she crashed his new car into a tree; he calmy talking her through it and she knew he was “the one.” They were happily married for nearly 60 years until his passing in 2013. Elwood would always say, “There’s no one in the world like wee-Hazey.” Her loving attentive care amid his final years of failing health was a shining example of true love and devotion. Together they proudly owned and operated Hazelwood Orchards for many years growing some of Beaver Valley’s finest apples. Among their many other successful business pursuits was the Trillium Restaurant. Together Hazel and Elwood were unstoppable and an adventurous team: from the hairdressing shop to the farms, the restaurant, multiple real estate flips, to running a lodge up north on Shawanaga Lake. They loved to travel, enjoying and appreciating the foods, music and people of different cultures, always happy to return home with tales to tell. They left a legacy of hard work, independent thinking, integrity, give-you-the-shirt-off-their-back and “come in for dinner” is what they stood for.
Without question Hazel’s greatest pride and joy was her family, she was always playful, loving, attentive, generous, often busy sewing and interior decorating. Barely 5’ tall, she had a stubborn and strong streak, “like an ox”, she knew her mind and wouldn’t budge on her convictions under that unruffled exterior. Immensely proud of her children and grandkids, and their accomplishments she made every family get-together an epic event full of love, joy and of course so much food.
With Hazel firmly behind the wheel and Elwood with the map, Mom and Dad drove countless hours and miles often bone-tired to support and encourage, believing wholeheartedly in their young kids’ musical dreams. For many years they’d drive across Canada to arrive unannounced at musical events having sensed “the kids are homesick” while on tour. Apples, homemade treats, gifts from home, and dinners out for the whole band were always a welcome relief. On one such trip, they retrieved a big ol’ Tom cat (Freddy The Free Loader) better suited to farm life than touring with the band. Grami never missed a grandkids graduation, piano recital, rodeo, school pick-up, or a last-minute meet-up for lunch. Her door was always open to friends, neighbors, family or strangers, as well as pets and stray animals – she was going feed you whether you were hungry or not! Busy baking pies, throwing on a roast, whipping up a pot of chicken soup, or flipping pancakes- no one ever went hungry when Hazel was around! Her retirement was contently spent at Eugenia Lake (though she never retired from cooking up a storm). Hazel loved to swim, race the boat and wave runners, and lay in the sun reading a trashy romance novel; a fish fry was always in order followed by a well-timed skinny dip. Her last ten months were spent in Errinrung Long Term Care, adored by the staff for her sweet nature, gracious appreciation and sense of humour. The Harbottle family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Errinrung staff for the incredible care, compassion and kindness shown to Hazel and our family as well as thank Dr. Tim Remillard for his many years of care and quick response when in need.
A private family memorial service will be held with a celebration of life to follow at a later date. We will miss our Mom and Grami greatly, but there is peace knowing it was her time, she lived life to the fullest, loved and was loved deeply. There’s comfort in knowing she is reunited with those she missed so dearly and has earned her Rest In Peace.
As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Errinrung Resident’s and Family Council (Cheques Only) would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted. www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

What wonderful words, of a great lady, always a smile on her face. Your dad and mom were a great couple and very proud of the 3D’s who we all recall, on television.

Our condolences to the Harbottle and Parkes families with the passing of Hazel, she was a great lady and will be missed, especially by the Bridle family and neighbors at the lake. It won’t be the same. Anne thought the world of Hazel as we all did, Barb had only known her a short time, but they hit it off right away. Our many years at the lake together created a lot of great memories, the tricks we played, the fun we had, Hazel was always in the middle of it along with Elwood. We love you Hazel, R.I.P. Say hello to Elwood for us. Terry Bridle & Barbra MacPhail

To Dale, Dean, Debbie, and the Harbottle family, our deepest condolences…
Hazel was a wonderful woman, I call a few ladies my second momma… but none a second grandma and she was both to me.
I’ve known Hazel, Elwood, and the family practically my whole life. From day 1 they all made me feel like I was family, always including us (my sisters Cindy and Bonnie) in everything that went on at the cottage. Boat races and water skiing, games, I could go on and on about the fun we all had growing up. Hazel was the most patient woman I’ve ever known, dealing with us crazy kids as well as her own. Now lets get to the food, Hazel would always disappear for a while while we were all having fun and when the dinner bell rang my goodness did she always have a huge spread for everyone present. we always had a shared fish fry near the end of our cottage trip and everyone was invited. While technically we are neighbours up there at the cottage we have always acted as family. The nights sitting around the fire with Dale, Dean and Debbie playing guitars and singing are some of the best nights I’ve ever had. Hazel was so proud of her kids you could see it in her eyes easily on those nights.
When I brought my girl Aline up for the first time with her son Pierre, the were instantly family to her, and that made my heart melt. Fast forward to when she met wee Jeydan and later wee Braxxton and the result was the same, they loved her, to the point they would go visit on their own.
Hazel will be dearly missed by all of us.
Very sorry for your loss, Bobby, Aline, Pierre, Jeydan and Braxxton
