Morris, Richard Allan

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Richard Morris of Meaford, Ontario. Richard passed peacefully at the Owen Sound Hospital on the morning of Friday, March 22nd, 2024 at the age of 79.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marilyn Morris, and by his family and friends.

Richard spent his career in Toronto teaching and mentoring.  His hobbies:  car racing, sailing, skiing, running, cycling and woodworking kept him active.  Richard and Marilyn chose to retire to Meaford.  He poured his heart into the creation of the ‘great room’ at their home. Many had the pleasure of enjoying a visit in this wonderful space.  Richard was an active community volunteer, spending countless hours assisting with the Scarecrow Invasion, Community Living and the Meaford United Church.

A private family service will take place later this year.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Diabetes Canada would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca

Marilyn and Family. The passing of another wonderful person. I will always remember my first racing wheels, carefully built by Richard and sharing a “50” in the backyard in Toronto. I remember a wonderful active man who genuinely cared about others and whose passion for sports and the outdoors was so inspiring and infective. It is good to look back on those times, because as with the seasons, we all change. I hope all of those memories give you comfort. Lots of love. Gord.

My sincere condolences to Marilyn and family. Richard spread his love of Meaford through his many volunteer positions throughout the community. Most memorable for me was the fun and commitment to the Scarecrow Invasion.

I met Richard on a cold snowy morning in December 1979 and spent the next 6 hours with him in his unheated Volkswagen Beetle visiting a number of his behavioural students in a variety of North York High Schools. Our friendship began that day and for the next 20 years, until his retirement, we worked very closely together in a variety educational capacities. He was a mentor and a resource beyond compare while at the same time revealed a character full of humility, generosity and humour. Although Richard was a divergent thinker he was also a quiet leader who got things done. Yet he was not one to seek credit for doing so. To me Richard was a Renaissance man skilled at many things including football, sailing, distance running, skiing (downhill and cross-country) and mechanics to name a few. The only thing he was average at was penny ante poker a monthly activity he played with a half dozen of his closest colleague-friends. These nights were always a fun time, not just with friends, but with family.

Although Richard struggled throughout his life from the debilitating symptoms of diabetes he did his best to live a full life and clearly he did. Richard will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched but the fond memories created by time spent with him will endure.
